Thanks Ray

I noticed they have a detailed boning option for 10 bucks...wondering if it is worth it or just cosmetic...is that the standard model in the above pic?

Good question, sir. The major part of fitting a holster to the handgun is forming the interior to the contours of the weapon. Properly done, this adds significantly to the ability of the holster to retain the handgun, and also eliminates any movement of the handgun within the holster (the primary cause of holster wear). This work can be done relatively quickly (assuming that the holster has been designed, assembled, and sewn properly) with the hands, fingers, knuckles, and a couple of smooth tools at the time the holster is initially formed.

Detail boning involves working the exterior of the holster's surfaces using a variety of tools to compress the leather and achieve the finest possible fit to the handgun. During this process the moisture content of the leather, as well as temperature, must be within a narrow range, so considerable time is spent on the process over two or three sittings. The results do, in fact, improve interior fitting to the handgun, while also providing a pleasing effect on the exterior.

This work cannot be rushed, as explained above. That is why I have decided to offer it as an optional feature for those who wish to pay a little extra for the time involved. The benefits are both cosmetic as well as functional.

By making this work optional I can keep my general production prices down for the many customers who are happy with a very good fit and finish at a very competitive price for a very functional product.

As an additional note, detail boning is not recommended on carved or tooled leather products as the boning process damages the detail of the carving or tooling.

Just sent me a photo this morning, hopefully I'll have it sometime next week.

Got mine in the mail today! It's a great holster and needs little more than a loose fitting T shirt to conceal a 5" 1911. I'm wearing it around the house to get used to it right now.

Can one of you with the pancake post a picture of the holster from the top without the gun in it so I can see how thick it is? Thanks

Sipowicz: If you would like to e-mail me (contact link on the website) I can send additional photos of anything you like. Thickness: all of my holsters are made of 8-oz. vegetable-tanned cowhide which is approx. 1/8" thick. Some compression takes place during the fitting process, but a completed pancake-style holster is approx. 1/4" thick at the double-layer areas.

Here's a top view without the gun of mine

3 inch N Frame IWB

Ray built this one for a 625-3 heavy barrel and shroud.
Fits my tapered barrel 624 just as nicely.
Nice stiff leather with enough boning that the heavy N frame stays put.
Don't forget the hammer guard.....you're a pretty tough guy if your skin is stronger that that checkered hammer.

Great holster for the money.

I have purchased both an IWB and OWB from Ray, as well as 3 mag pouches. I second all these kudos. He is a fine craftsman and an excellent example of how to successfully operate a small business. I wear the IWB with my 3913 for extended periods of time. It conceals the weapon well and is very comfortable.

+1 for Ray also

After reading about him here, I ordered an IWB for My model 10. It came today. It fits the gun Perfectly & Puts it in just the right position to be very Comfortable. Thanks for every thing Ray
