I have been hunting for a 686 no lock for quite some time. My LGS sends an Email every Friday afternoon with new inventory etc. I emailed back within seconds asking if it was lock or no lock. He replied I was no lock. I replied within seconds if he would hold it until 11am Saturday. They open at 10. He did not reply. I got there at 10:15 this morning and somebody was doing paperwork on it. What the heck ? . Wasnt pleased. I spend a lot of money there on guns and accessories. Buyer was also taking the handgun test meaning he was a first time buyer. Oh well. Debating on whether to send him an angry email or not.

Since you are a repeat offender, er customer, he should have given you first dib. That would have generated a lot of good will and future sales. However, since he did not commit, I don't think he is obligated. I would write an email expressing your disappointment at missing out on something you've been looking for without assigning blame. That, in combination with your previous emails, would have sent a message.

If you have an otherwise good relationship with the shop I wouldn't make too big a fuss. You may not have all the facts.... despite the speed of your reply, the other buyer could have said he'd take it first... or perhaps they didn't see your second email.. I know my dealer isn't always sitting there waiting for replies. And often when bulk emails get sent out, not all the recipients get it at the same time.

Sure, you're disappointed. But it just doesn't pay to get butthurt about some things. Maybe an even better one will show up soon... or the guy who bought this one will bring it back when he can't find any ammo, and you'll get a sweeter deal!

Just make sure you have the facts. I've been on "lists" for certain makes and models at my LGS. Someone may have been on there before you. Or maybe not. If someone was on, the dealer should have let you know. However, as someone that has a very full e-mail in box, he could have missed it.

If you enjoy the store and service, and the prices are fair, it's best to approach with a friendly "Hey, about that 686, I was wondering..."

Had you called and spoken with someone I think that yo would be in a better position to be annoyed. E-mail is a curious beast and we have all come to rely on it far too much. You still don't *know* they received it and it is certainly possible that no one in fact read it before the sale was made to the other party. I think this one is best chalked up to experience.

It's okay to vent here. We all have bad experiences now and then. $ signs are in the eyes of most any dealer during this panic and they are making good on what they can while they can. The buyer that shows-up with the bucks gets the gun. He likely don't care about the possibility of losing you as a customer....there are too many others standing in line at the moment.

If its something you want why reply with an email? Why not call!?!? You could have sent the email in a sec but he might have gotten it in 15 min, maybe he was too busy to look at it.

I wouldnt send any emails nor would i "not deal with him again". I just dont see it as that big a deal.

+ 1

Small local shops don't have around-the-clock staff manning banks of PC to answer emails. If you had phoned the man you would have a legitimate complaint, as it is...it seems like it is a case of two busy guys who didn't make a solid connection. I would give the man the benefit of the doubt. You will run out of friends in a hurry if you hold them to unwavering standards.

Email and internet (forum) bitching, complaining, etc is a faceless act, ie, it doesnt really matter... you are anonymous. If one discussess a problem with someone face to face, they are accountable. And there is no need to make a scene, I would just have a conversation with him and let him know they let you down. Then again, an actual conversation with a clerk who has a name and a face and is accountable would have probably held it for you in the first place. Just my 2 cents..... hope it helps. This whole computer age has created just about as many problems as it has solved. We are losing touch as Humans sometimes.......

I work in an LGS one day a week- until the current lunacy ceases the only way to buy a gun is to show up with all the proper papers and money in hand- no lay-aways, no deposits...just purchases- and the stupid instant check now takes 2 weeks- got to love NJ (NOT)

I made the same mistake once. I learned that a gun shop about 100 miles west of here had a Smith & Wesson 629 that I wanted, so I sent an email stating that I would be out to buy it the next morning. I arrived about an hour after they opened only to find out that the gun was listed on GunBroker.com, someone had hit the "Buy Now" button overnight and they had not yet gotten around to checking their email that morning.

CALL THEM! Use that phone for a phone instead of a computer!

I'm mostly just venting but it was a good price for a no lock gun here in CA. when I got there at 1015 and saw the gun being written up, I talked to one of the clerks I see when I drop by most every weekend just to see what they have in stock I said I emailed "shop ownersname" to please hold it till 11 am for me. Sheepish gee sorry. This shop is just A few blocks from me and the only shop within 20 miles that arrives used inventory

Email is email. Phone calls are phone calls. But when the guy with cold hard cash plunks it down on the counter, the gun is his.

Some need to look at it from the gun shops perspective. You know how many times people want them to "hold" guns for them? And then they never show up?

The number one rule in business is this, make the money when you can!

If you wanted the gun you should have been there at 9:50 AM!!

Like this poster said only more so.

i would think real hard about doing any future transactions with this store.

These people hosed you.I would take my business elsewhere. and I would let them know why also. What they did is extremely bogus.

How do you figure? You don't get it do you? His email was purposely ignored because you don't ask someone to hold a gun for you!! Why should he? Do you call Walmart and ask them to hold something for you? I don't think so!!

Selfishness abounds here big time. If the OP was such a good customer then why has he never shared any good experiences with us about this gun shop?

The first thing you learn in business is there is no such thing as customer loyalty. And you make rules to protect your business which apply to everybody!

I would have a face to face with the shop owner. Calmly express your displeasure with his business style. Since he sent you an email with the price and description of the pistol and thus sold it without responding to your email. I would express my displeasure and ask for restitution. If he refuses, I then would vow to cut him a new one by besmirshing his business reputation via social media and word of mouth. I then would never set foot in that scumbag's place of business again and would ask the same of all of my friend who are customers of his.

I leaned long ago that whom I trust deserved my loyalty and those that don't need to learn the consequences of their actions.

Bye the way, who was it, so I'll never do a cent of business with them?

I think when he did not reply to the request asking him to hold it, you probably should have hustled down there on Friday. Sounds like he was reluctant to hold it or already had an interested buyer. Gotta move fast sometimes. I wouldn't blame the dealer. To you, it's the Holy Grail, to him it's the quickest buck.

Im in the car business and i know this one very well. Countless people call and say "i have cash in hand be there tomorrow" and never show up. And that's not bad....we've had countless times when people leave several hundred dollars to hold the car and never show up ..ever. a few times people even payed full price and said they were coming back the next day with an extra driver ...and never show up! It happens....cash is cash
