Need one for L frame stainless. Hope you decide to start making. John had preformed a great service, but it looks like someone else need to pick up the baton for the S & W family, so you have chosen to pick it up for us. I think you will do well as it appears there is a demand.

There definitely is a need now that other sources aren't filling orders.

Just one request: please update this thread if/when these do get offered. I do watch the for sale forum... but I can't really afford to spend too much time there (y'all know what I'm talking about!).

Whenever I get something going I'll post something in the 1980 up forum. A friend who's going to help me with this, a real live professional machinist, is getting a hip replaced next week. He'll be out of commission for a few weeks. In the meantime I'll try to get dimensions sorted out. I have not yet been in contact with John Whitt. I sort of hope I hear back that he'll be making plugs next week. But, we shall see. In any event, I wish him the best.

Well, Ed, I am still waiting for my order to John to be filled at this point. I placed the order for three plugs (two for J Frames and one for K Frame) in mid January. John has communicated with me a couple times in the interim and indicated he intended to complete his standing orders but would not likely be taking more orders, at least not anytime soon. I haven't bugged him about these because of the health related situation he faces. I've been thinking about trying to contact him again and see if he would prefer to just cancel the order and refund my payment to him. My feeling is that if he were able to complete my order, he would do so. I'm not complaining here ... stuff happens, and I believe what has happened to John is certainly pretty much beyond his control. I think he fully intended to complete my order and has just not been able to do so. I do not know what his chances are for recovery to be able to do so. At this point, I have my doubts, and for that, I am sorry! I would guess he might respond to an email from you and shed some light on that situation. He has been willing to do so with my inquiries.

I'd say if you are willing to take on this task, there would be some interest, based on comments and questions here on the forum, but I can't say if the level of interest would be worth your time and effort to get them into production. I'd say being able to produce the plugs for all three frame sizes eventually would increase the number of orders.

I've considered restoring the external plug with the spring and yoke that holds it in place internally and leaving out the flag portion that causes the problem. I can't really see any reason why those parts would not stay in place, but since the only gun I've removed the lock on is my EDC, I've been hesitant to take a chance on that. I can live with the hole, and as things are now, there is nothing in place to come loose and cause a problem when I least need one.

So, I would tell you that I definitely would be interested, especially for the M642 J Frame I speak of. I'm glad to hear that you are considering this project. Based on my experience with your sight pusher, I have no doubt you'd do a great job of producing these items. Since I have not received my plugs from John, I don't know exactly what his product contains as far as parts are concerned. If it's just the plug, which uses the existing internal parts to hold it in place, then my concern would evidently be unfounded if I were to put my existing lock plug back in place minus the flag.

I hope things work out for John, whether or not he is able to ever continue manufacturing his plugs. I also hope you can decide whether or not you can start production of these without crowding his business. I appreciate your concern for that. Good luck!!

BASED ON THIS POST, I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU PROCEED WITH PLANS TO BEGIN THE MANUFACTURE OF A PLUG. I HAVE DEALT WITH JOHN WITT. HE IS A TERRIFIC GUY, AND IS VERY LOYAL TO HIS CUSTOMERS. I'M SURE THAT HE HAD EVERY INTENTION OF FILLING HIS STANDING ORDERS. DUE TO HIS PHYSICAL CONDITION, HE MAY BE IN A BATTLE FOR HIS VERY LIFE. FILLING THOSE ORDERS MAY BE IMPOSSIBLE, AND RIGHTFULLY THE LEAST OF HIS CONCERNS…..

I DON'T THINK THAT JOHN WOULD WANT, OR EXPECT, FORUM MEMBERS TO PUT THEIR NEEDS ON HOLD, PENDING THE OUTCOME OF HIS MEDICAL ISSUES---FOR BETTER OR WORSE. AT SOME POINT, I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT ALL MONEY WILL BE RETURNED, FOR UNFILLED ORDERS, BY EITHER JOHN OR HIS KIN. IN THE MEANTIME, I SUGGEST THAT WE ALL KEEP JOHN IN OUR PRAYERS…..

Who wants plug

I would take 2. One for 686 and one for 617, Also I'm saving my money for a 686 SSR and I would need 1 for that two. No that makes 3 :-)

One Eye Joe,

You express my exact feelings about John. My intent was not to disparage John in any way. I agree that he is not likely able at this point in time to return my email. I believe if it ever becomes possible for him to provide his product or refund the monies he holds for standing orders, that will be done.

My intention was to indicate that I also feel that he would not be insulted or offended if another begins to provide the products that he apparently cannot now provide. His indication to me was that if he could complete his standing orders, it would not be likely that he would be in a position to continue full time or at all. Only an indication, but never the less, an indication of that.

I believe anyone could and should proceed if they feel they have the potential market to make their production of these items a paying proposition. As for John and his kin, they have all been in my prayers and will continue to be until I hear they are no longer necessary. I just hope we eventually get news and that it is good news.

Bullseye Smith

Bullseye Smith missing? This is strange. He has been ever regular in the discharge of his duties.
I fear he is indisposed; I fear some calamity has befallen him.

As of October 2014 his mailing address was:

John Whitt
P.O. Box 1305
Scott Depot, WV 25560
and the phone number on his card was: 303-993-5060

I will try to contact him (or his family) to see what's going on. He is probably very ill or, God forbid, dead. Some prayers would be nice.

I would be interested in several plugs. Whatever happens with Bullseye I think that carrying on with your plan to make them would, in a way, honor John by continuing the work he started. You are a man of honor, I see nothing inappropriate with doing the job.

Lock Plug

Perfect timing! I just posted in the WTB for a plug. I'd be interested in two for a 686 in stainless. Picking them up this weekend!

Newbie here. Please excuse me if I'm butting in or incorrectly responding. I'd like a plug for my new 340PD. I don't know what to call this finish but having a plug that blends in well would be extra nice.

I'd be interested in a stainless one for an L frame and my shooting buddy wants a stainless one for his N frame.

Thanks for the input, guys. A friend of mine, who is a professional machinist, is going to help me figure out the best way to make these plugs. We'll have to use a mill rather than a lathe. His lathe is too big, and mine probably is too small. Anyway, he's having hip surgery tomorrow and will be out of commission for about six-eight weeks. When he's able to get on his feet, we have plans to make a few samples and fit them in some of my guns. This will test how well we can duplicate Jonh's plug ( or my rendition of it) and also tell me about the time require to make them. That will determine the cost. The cost of materials is insignificant, it's all machine time. Looking at sometime around the middle of July before I can do anything else.
Regards
Ed

That's great news Ed, do you think you will be able to match the various finishes like John did? You will do well in this new business, as you can see orders are already backing up.
Sam

The brushed finish is not a problem. The black finish can be done a couple of different ways. Dunno about the bead blast finish. I don't have a blast cabinet. I guess I could take a handful to someone and get them blasted. Don't know how well the finish would match. I have a regular plug in my 627 Pro that has a bead blast finish. Doesn't look that bad.

I hate to say this but,if you have a problem with the lock and have to send it in,my rep from S&W told me that the warranty will not be covered on the revolvers if they see the plug. I am a wholesaler and that is from my rep.

That thinking is pushing more and more S&W loyalists to Ruger. Last year I broke down and bought a Ruger GP100 Match Champion because of the lock issue and found that I really like that gun.

I CAN ATTEST TO THIS BEING THE TRUTH. I SENT A NEW 617 IN FOR WARRANTY WORK, WITH JOHN'S PLUG IN IT. THEY SAID THAT IT VOIDED MY WARRANTY. THEY CHARGED ME FOR TRANSPORTATION BOTH WAYS, THE COST OF THE REPAIRS, THE COST OF ANOTHER PLUG, AND AN INSTALLATION FEE. THE SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, RETURN A GUN WITH AN IL MISSING…..

That's why you save the parts and reinstall the lock if you have to send one in for repairs. OTOH, I personally have owned 40-50 S&W pistols and revolvers over a 40+ year span and have yet to find it necessary to send any of them in for repairs.
