Is the positioning of the S & W logo on the right side of the frame on a 27-2 dictated by the stock, Magna or Target? I have seen many logos partially covered up by a factory Target stock. On others with Target stocks the logo is positioned higher. I can't find any answers in the Supica/Nahas book.

Unfortunately I do not know the answer you seek, but I too have wondered why the logo was in different locations on seemingly identical revolvers. Your theory is as good as any.

If you can find the answer to your question, please share. S&W was sort of like FN in Belgium ( re; the HP). All kinds of random SNs, roll marks, specs. etc.:D

I think Doc44 hit the answer in his post above. Below pics are three of my "27's" all wearing different grips that all came as you see them from the factory. So different eras, for sure different people, but the right side logos seemingly look the same, at least to me.

S prefix, "pre-27" Letters 1952, Magna stocks,

27-2 with 3-1/2" bbl Blue with Factory Goncalo Alves smooth stocks Letters 1977

27-2 Nickel with factory Targets, 1980

Engine49guy may be able to nail down the dates the roll marks were changed. At least he has done it in the past with the Combat Masterpiece. It might be worthwhile to send him a PM and see what he has to say.

If you do receive additional information; please share it with us, as previously requested by OLDSTER above.

Thank you,

Purely an observation of 27s in my collection, but I have noticed the side plate roll mark is more often found to be higher on the side plate for 27's shipped after the mid-1970's (1975 I think) factory directive to ship the 27's with Target Hammer, Target Trigger and Target Grips. This allows the roll mark to be unobstructed by the target grips.

I saw FS at a GS a VS (very nice) 28-2 at GP (good price) but the only flaw was the side plate featured a waffle head hammer bash. That killed the deal for me reasoning that even if I were to find a matching replacement for the side plate, the evidence of some one frustrated with trying to align the hammer block properly must have tried to bash it back together, most likely impacting further internals. Bubba Strikes Again.

I have a Model 27 that shipped sometime between 1972 and 1974; the roll mark is not obstructed by target stocks.

Just so there's no misunderstanding, my Model 27 shown in the above photo has been "dolled up" with the Target Stocks, Target Hammer, and Target Trigger to suit my personal preferences. The photos below show how it looked when it left the factory.

I've always been chagrined that the side plate logo on most K-frames and many N-frames would be partially covered up with the installation of factory target stocks. In my opinion, when the factory first offered target stocks, they should have issued an order that the logo always be placed in the upper position to avoid the partial coverup. It just looks so wrong!
