Look what I turned a Glock 17 into!

Congratulations you did really well in my book and I would have made the trade in an instant.

Congrats CQB27!

You did very well. Traded a Glock-->soulless tactical tupperware (albeit reliable and effective) for a real handgun! I really like the 629 as I purchased a 5" magnaported variety a few months back. You will find a very smooth double action trigger and lethal accuracy in "capable" hands. 44 special is absolutely tame in that firearm as I find myself shooting at 25 yards with one hand and keeping everything within a 1 foot diameter. Your gun is pre-Clinton lock as well--bravo! I just purchased a sweet M 696 5-shot L-frame .44 special (36 oz, stainless, pre-lock, magnaported). It is compact and very packable. I am going to use Buffalo Bore Heavy .44 special 180 grain JHP (1155 fps, 543 ft-lbs---3.25 inch S&W 396 barrel) for self defense and the 255 grain hard cast keith (984 fps, 548 ft-lbs---3.25 inch S&W 396 barrel) for black bear/predator protection.

Heavy 44 Special Pistol & Handgun Ammunition

The Buffalo Bore 180 grain JHP .44 special is a fantastic defense/duty load and with 543 ft-lbs of muzzle energy has more knock-down power than almost any .45 ACP. A great defense load for the Model 629.

Either one of these loads is a pussycat out of my 36 oz 696 and feel like lightweight target .38 spl out of the 629 you just bought. Enjoy it man!

Thanks for the very informative response. I have never shot a single round of 44 special, but I am looking forward to doing just that. I took a look at the Buffalo Bore web site and will be ordering from them for sure.

No problem man Take a look at some of the 44 magnum loads from Buffalo Bore as well. They develop between 1000 to 1200 ft-lbs of muzzle energy and attract a lot of attention at the range!

I traded locally today with fine gentleman. I swapped a Glock 17, some 9mm ammo and a kydex holster for some 44 Magnum Ammo and this...............A 629-1!

It has a few handling marks, but I plan to give it a good polish with Flitz, then a set of Grashorn Grips. This will be my woods and "knock around the homestead" Gun. More than enough for the four legged and two legged varmits that inhabit NW Georgia

Serial number is AJCxxxx

UPDATE

The Grashorn Stockes arrived Monday so I got them installed and took it to the range this morning.

It has been awhile since I shot a 44 Magnum and never with full bark stag stocks and a Tyler-T, so I did not know what to expect. It was still cool in North Georgia at 0905 this morning (range quite hours end at 0900), so I carefully aimed from the 15 yard line and let her rip.

First I was like  and then I was like :D. I finished the cylinder and checked the target out. Six holes you could cover with a silver dollar! I sprinted back to the 15 yard line, loaded up again and gave it another go, this time be very careful to focus on the front sight. Six shots, back to the target, six holes you could cover with a quarter! Now I was like .

By this time another fellow instructor had been sitting at his desk and heard the louder than normal boom. He decided to wander out and see what was going on. I motioned him over and ask him to call my shots. I fired one round, he replied "center mass". I fired again and he replied "same hole!". I fired again and he replied "CAN I SHOOT IT!". He is a youngster (about 27) and a total noob when it comes to revolvers.

He shot a cylinder, then me, then him...until we had blown through 70 rounds. He stared at my 629 like it was some kind of mirage. I think he will be buying a revolver very soon!I walked off that range with a huge grin on my face that lasted all day. I am still grinning now. All in All I am very happy with my 629 and I don't miss that Glock 17 at all. I actually liked the recoil. The truth is it made me giggle like a school girl every time I fired. I can't wait to shoot it again and it looks like it is time for me to learn to reload!

Very interesting lighting in the update photo. It could almost pass for a blued 29. Might you be willing to share some details of how that photo was taken?

I really know nothing about photography. It was taken in the evening light with a Canon Sure Shot digital camera. I just pointed and shot, sorry I couldn't be of more help than that.

When I read the title of the post I was like:confused:

Then I saw the 629 as it came to you and I was like:)

Then you wrote that you polished it and I was like:(

Then I saw the result with Patrick's stags and I was like:D

Then I read about your awesome shooting and I was like:eek:

But I noticed you never posted a pic of that target...and now I'm like:p

Great story, great post, good night.

That is the best glock stipple job I have ever seen. How long did it take with the soldering iron?

When I first saw the thread title, I was worried. Now I am just impressed! You should hook your neighbor to the east up on some deals like that. :D

I traded my 17 for a real nice older Detective Special a couple of years ago and I was very happy with the deal...you deserve to be ecstatic--a piece of plastic for an "adult" handgun. Such a deal!

CQB27: Awesome post and awesome trade! I really like my Glocks. I really do. I've got a couple dozen of them, at least. But, several of the posters above really describe the truth: They are tactical tools and not something to really be enjoyed, appreciated or held in the same esteem as a well-made revolver... Certain of my Glocks will be some of the last handguns I'd ever consider getting rid of, but my absolute last handgun that I will never get rid of is a S&W 629!

Now, to fit in with the rest of the wise guys around here:

What is a Glock?
It's what S&W stole the Sigma design from...
