I just picked up a 15-22 this weekend and now I'm looking for advice on the extras. I'm looking for a case so I can keep it locked Up in the home (just enough to keep a kid out, doesn't need to be high security) and travel to the range with. Will any basic 22 cleaning kit work for the rifle? Any advice on cleaning?

Finally I'm also looking for suggestions on a cheap red dot to mount it just for having fun at the range.

Thanks

Hi,

Firstly Well done on a fine purchase,

As for the rest, this is me, you may wish to opt for different options but in answer to your post,

SKB 2 carbine hard case. Lockable and durable.

Eotech EXPS 3-4 & G33 (for now, tho soon to be 3-0 )

Cleaning kit is Boresnake, Real bristle shaving brush and Issue cleaning kit for British SA80 5.56 rifle also small compressor for air blast now and then. Tho only pull barrel every once in a while.

Hope that helps. :-)

Rob.

The Eotech is a fantastic sight, but isn't exactly cheap.

If I were looking at an inexpensive red dot, I would go over to Primary Arms site-very good quality for very inexpensive prices, or get the Bushnell TRS-25.

+1 for the TRS-25.
I bought an airsoft case being a super cheapass!!!! Works really well.
Just buy some spray cleaner, an old toothbrush and a boresnake.
Spend your hard earned money on ammo!

Congrats on the purchase:D For a case i got the Plano all weather case 36" Hard case with pluck foam so you can easily custom fit your rifle in there and alter easily as you add accessories. Good price too and it has locking hinges and holes to add pad locks. Bore snake and a basic cleaning kit should be fine. For a sight it depends on what kind you like. if you like the tube style the TSR1 is great from what i hear. For an open style like the eotech the sightmark should be great without breaking the bank. I would also suggest a new charging handle and latch as the stock one is plastic. NDZ performance has a nice one just for the 15-22 and they have some other cool things for the 15-22 as well. All of wich are a very easy install anyone can do. Hope this helps. ENJOY and be safe
Also Tacticool22 has some stuff for the 15-22 also great stuff from what i hear.

Storing a rifle in a case is a pretty good way to develop rust freckles. The cloth/foam holds in moisture from condensation. Put a cable lock through the ejection port and magazine well and stick it in the corner someplace.

I brought up two daughters and now am working on two grandchildren. With proper training, there is no need to worry about keeping a kid out, particularly if locked as I described.

Not sure if you found a red dot yet, but CDNN Sports has a BSA 5 moa red dot for $24 until 7:00 p.m. cst tonight. After that it goes back up to $30.00.

I picked up the m and p case from Amazon. Thanks for the recommendation. Still searching for a red dot. What does moa mean and what number would be best for target shooting? Do you guys think a really cheap one will last long, or just spring for a high quality one even though just for targets. Where is the best place to get extra mags? Thanks

MOA means minute of angle. 1 MOA is just about 1" at 100 yards, .5" at 50 yards, etc.

The larger the MOA, the bigger the 'dot', and the more that it will obscure your target. Never thought your geometry/trigonometry classes would come back to haunt you, huh?

For instance, a clay pigeon is 4" in diameter. If you have a 4MOA red dot, it will completely cover the target at 100 yards.

Since the 15-22 rifle is a 2-4 MOA accurate rifle (meaning the rounds will generally group between 2 and 4 inches at 100 yards), a 3-4 MOA red dot is reasonable.

There are tons of red dots that meet that goal. It comes down to what you want: multi color (red/green dot), multi reticle (more than just a dot), cost, size, tube vs reflex, battery life, weight, ....

The primary arms red/green dot is an excellent value, but there are lots of decent inexpensive options out there.

As far as extra mags ... Google search. Typical price is around $15-20. Stay away from plinker tactical mags. Stick with the S&W 10 round short, 10 round long (which can be turned into 25 round magazines assuming your state allows them), and 25 round long magazines. Black dog 50 round drums are also ok, but cost a bit ($80, can find them on sale for $40 occasionally)
