I am looking at safes. I looked at Cabelas and then at Gander. They both carry Liberty safes. I am looking at the Ambassador series 24 gun which is also the Lincoln series at Gander. They are the exact same safe. Just that Cabelas put their name and logo all over the front in 2 places. The size is 60.5"Hx30"Wx27.5"D. It is lighted inside with LED's and also has a dehumidifier. It also weighs 730 lbs so I would not worry about anyone hauling it off that easy. It runs $2100 at Gander and $2300 at Cabelas. If anyone has any experience with this model, let me know what you think. If anyone has any other advice on other models, I would be very appreciative.

I am interested in a good safe as well.

I overheard a Tractor Supply employee talking about the Winchester Safes not having a good warranty.

check craigs list for safes. you might find one there.

I have a Liberty, don't know the model, but I am very happy with it. I have had it for 20 years or so.

Nothing in my area on craigslist right now. One of the reasons I like the safes at Cabelas and Gander ar that the models that I am looking at are the gloss black. Looking like this, it can be put somewhere out in the living area instead of hiding it in a closet.

Whatever you decide on, be sure to get it big enough. I would suggest twice as big as you think you need. Consider scopes, levers, pistol grips and such. You also may want to consider a mechanical lock over electric (battery).

I got a Liberty Franklin 25 a few months ago and really like it. I would highly recommend Liberty. Do the prices include delivery? You can order directly from Liberty and they have delivery services available online. I haven't compared the prices against those you found but you might want to do that if you have time!

I purchased a Liberty Lincoln 50 in blue with chrome hardware..... only one problem.....I've already filled it up and ran out of room.

Seriously though, great company to do business with. The local guy was AWESOME! Be aware though, most dealers don't stock them.....they have to order them. It took 3.5 months to get mine. Waaaaaay worth it though.

Absolutely true on the mechanical over electric...also, if you are concerned with warranty service or just fantastic customer service in general I suggest you look at Amsec {American Security safes.} I had one that started out an electric lock. The lock which was a S&G failed and locked me out. Amsec was ready to send at their expense across country a brand new safe. I asked if they could just have a local lock smith repair it as I still had to get it opened to get my stuff out. They had him install the new electric lock. It failed again and this time they changed it to mechanical at my request no charge for any of the above. I had a locksmith tell me once not to trust the little key lock on the dial to keep someone out. I typically leave it on the next to last number and lock the dial so I dont have to run the entire combo everytime I want in the safe. Thats fine if you are home or nearby but if you go away spin the dial so it stays locked. This would have been an advantage for having an electric lock but I couldn't get two to last no time and dont know anyone that ever has.

No, those prices didn't include shipping. I know shipping is pretty expensive for these due to the weight. I have been shopping around online. I am leaning toward the Liberty also. Just not sure what size I will decide on.

I've got an amsec bf 7250. I think it's quite a bit more safe than your going to get at any big box.

If I was going to buy from a big box, the first place I'd check would be costco. Among the the big box store safes (Costco included) its long been my belief there is not a lot of difference. No matter what Chuck Yeager says.

My amsec is not a true "safe". Industry standards for a safe are higher than anything you've mentioned.

I have sold and serviced safes for 20 years. We used to deliver and install but thankfully we don't any more.

Can't go wrong with Liberty. Same can be said for Cannon, American Security, Fort Knox, Gardall, Browning, and National Security. Stay far away from Sentry and Winchester carried by Costco.

Some things to remember. Gun safes are classified as a Residential Security Container. But don't let anyone tell you they are less secure. A quality gun safe is far more secure than any one person will need.

Check the warranties offered. Some will offer free replacement/repair in the event of a fire or burglary. But some will make you pay for the shipping.

Have it delivered and installed. It's well worth the money. Have it installed during the week when neighbors are away at work.

Definitely buy one size bigger. You or your family WILL find more to put in it when you go on vacation.

Media such as flash drives, CD's, DVD's, backup drives, film, negatives will NOT survive a fire in a gun safe. They require a much lower temperature to survive a fire.

SO......... Buy one of those fireboxes from Sentry commonly sold at Walmart. Put those items inside and THEN put it in the gun safe. These items require a double insulated safe. Figure out what size box you need and then where you will put it in your new gun safe.

Buy a dehumidifier to go with it.

I have seen guns that went through a fire inside a quality gun safe. Some of the guns didn't fair well. Plastic parts deformed and the finish was ruined. One way to prevent this is silicone treated gun socks. And I have also seen guns that were left in the gun safe after a fire that rusted. Why? The fire department hosed down the home. And either the seals on the gun safe let water seep in or it was condensation inside the safe. Again, use gun socks.

And as far as combinations, I highly recommend a traditional dial. Not digital. Digital does not last anywhere near what a dial type does. I have replaced many that have failed. And I have seen dial types that were almost 100 years old that still worked fine. However, if you have arthritis, have trouble remembering the dial sequence, or intend to use the safe for quick access, then get a digital combination. Just be aware that if it goes bad and the safe is closed, your looking at $300 and up just to get it opened. And list price on an S&G digital combination is $350.00 or so. $650 and up for repairs is nothing to take lightly. The dial type MAY need to be serviced every other year. That could cost $150 and up. But again it will last longer.

Something I just remembered... I bought mine at a local authorized dealer (not a big box store like Cabelas) and they actually beat the online delivered price quoted on Liberty's website. You might want to see if they have other authorized dealers in your area and compare their prices before you buy or order one.

There are many good safes out there. Get one that is also fire proof and water proof. You don't want the contents saved from a fire only to be destroyed by the water putting out the fire.

Various lock options are available. Electronic key pads (numeric and finger print) will probably be destroyed in a fire and the S&G combination locks are pickable by pros so, you need to seriously consider the options. I have manual combination.

Interiors also have multiple options that go with the sizes. Be sure you get one tall enough for your longest gun/item. My Remington Model 12 Trap is a long gun and needs the added height inside the safe.

I would suggest you support your local business instead of online. Go to Liberty's website and find a dealer. If you have a problem with a 500 pound or more gun safe from an online seller that is not factory authorized, you won't be happy with the outcome.

I purchase a Cannon Wide Body from Tractor Supply in mid December. Has lights and inside outlet. Wt is around 700 lbs.
When they deliver make sure what ever they are using to move the safe across the floor doesn't damage it. I'm now in the process of filing a claim with the delivery company for the damage.

They usually go on sale a coupe times a year. Mine was on sale for $999.99 reg 1299.99.

I searched and found a local dealer that sells Liberty. The price with all of the accessories (lights, electrical outlet, dehumidifier, dial lock, jewelry drawer and gloss black), delivery and installation is $3083. That is well below Cabelas and Gander. I like the Liberty safe because of the warranty and options. I know it is a little pricey, but it will be something that will be around for a long time.

no battery, no key pad... just a dial with 4 or more numbers and 4 or more bar lock with internal protected hinges...

That's exactly the approach needed. Too many people learn the hard way. A quality safe is an investment. Once you get the safe, buy more guns!:p

Bigger is better. Fireproof and waterproof are primo. When it's all done and said, bolt it (securely) to the floor / wall or both.
