Looking for pocket J Frame with +P option

Hi folks, looking for a +P capable light (scandium) J frame in 38 spl that will be a good pocket carry gun. Magnum capable is OK but I don't plan to shoot magnums. I would like the ability wo
shoot +P loads however.

There are a number on the market and I need advice about what
is the most practical. Hammerless is OK but being old school a
gun with a hammer (shrouded) is more appealing.

What advice can you folks offer? What is the best value that
will work for my needs? This would be EDC gun, so weight is important
(light as practical).

My favorite J-frame is the M&P340 (no lock) SKU: 103072 It has the best sights/sight picture of any J-frame, in my opinion. With a wide u-notch rear and, XS standard dot(tritium) front sight, its very "shootable." It weighs 13.3 oz. (your grip/stock selection can have an impact on the overall weight.)

The "downside" for some is the price. But, its only money.....

The weight difference between a scandium and standard aluminum alloy J frame is not significant for carry. So, a 642 for hammerless, or a 637 (corrected) or 360 J (as mentioned above) for an exposed hammer, or (for the true experts who don't care about looks ) a 638 Bodyguard with the shrouded hammer. Don't you mean 637? Considering the 627 is a stainless steel N-Frame (chunk of revolver)

A M638/438 Bodyguard would give you a shape ideal for EDC and a concealed shrouded hammer that is cockable for single action. It's everything you asked for.

To the OP

You mention 'pocket carry.' I would think twice before buying a hammer gun (637, 360J) for pocket use. Yeah, I know, you can put your thumb on the hammer spur while drawing, but outside of cargo pockets, most pockets are cut on the 'tight' side.

Me, I can't draw a hammer gun from a laundry bag without it catching on the material!

I have, and have fired, both the S&W 642 & the 342 (scandium). I urge you t fire both weight revolvers prior to making your choice. I'm a long time shooter and the pain of firing the 342 makes the gun unbearable to fire.

^^^^ Even with wadcutter ammo! You can't make this stuff up. My 342 sits in the safe while the 642 and other hammerless guns barely 3ozs heavier see daily use.

I'm a 638-3 fan. Hammer is shrouded but you can still cock it manually.

I carry a 638 and a 360J. They are both great carry guns and the choice comes down to which one is in the pocket holster when I grab it. They are both that good!!!!!

I'm old school too , no hammer models just didn't cut it. I didn't like not being able to thumb back a hammer. Friends in police department , who carried J-frames with hammers said the hammer catching issue was NOT an issue.
S&W model 637 , hammer, airweight, 38 special +P . bought and daily carried since 2005. The hammer catching issue has never been an issue..... I like the hammer models. My first J frame was a model 60, purchased in 1969. Liked it then but traded it to a LEO buddy for a model 58 in 1974. He needed a J-frame for concealment , I wanted a N-frame just to shoot !
Never did get another model 60 ,(regret) , the 637 is lighter and has been my pocket carry since 2005.

Another vote for the 638/438 Bodyguards.

The standard Airweights are plenty light enough for pocket carry. With softer 38 specials, they have enough mass to be somewhat comfortable at the range. Even with stout +P self defense "carry" ammunition, they are not too bad.

I've handled the scandium guns. I'll stick with what works for me. IF I were ever forced to keep only one gun, the 638 would be high on my list. I like it that much.

my 2 favorite EDC. Model 60 - no dash with issue grips, Model 637-2 with Factory option ($75 in 2002) Altamont Combats. Both loaded with + P, both carry fine for me, on person or in truck console, I don't seem to notice weight or bulk with either one. Hammerless is just not my thing.

I like the 442 but, if you want a hammer, the old 37 is a great gun. I shaved off the hammer but, I can still cock it for single action if I feel the need.

A few weeks ago I obtained a Model 632-1, 327 Fed Magmum and after firing 100 rounds I assure you it is one serious little revolver. Six rounds about the same power as 9mm +p. If you can find one, take lots of money, you won't be sorry. Mine fits my Levi's pocket just fine.

Another vote for the 637. I just like'em with hammers! Put the Apex spring kit in it and you are good to go!
