Loughner not competent to stand trial

He will be sent to a mental insitution for the criminaly insane. No surprise in the least. I never doubted from early on the outcome. While I dont agree with the process in these cases, I dont doubt he qualifys.
One of my old best friends many years ago was a "tech" (or glorified guard) who`s job was to be locked in the dorm all night with the criminaly insane. His job was to give them their shots when they got out of line. This was in california in the 60s and 70s. Jerry Brown was govenor, (is again). He was/is very liberal and changed many things on my buddys job, like stopping the use of the choke hold. My buddy told me even so, he would be dead in a week if he had stopped useing it!
He would back his chair against the wall and stay awake as he said many nights a nut would try to sneak up on him or they would often flip out. He could put them out in a few secounds with it and then give them their shot. He did get in trouble, but since he is now dead I dont mind relateing the story. He had many storys.

Probably dose him up with Thorazine until he quits hearing the voices-try him - convict him and send him off to some super max. Or he gets acquitted by reason of insanity and gets sent to the hospital wing of the super max. From what I'm told-he'll get the same drugs either place he winds up.
Can you tell I'm having a bad day???

All.
Local news says 4 or so months at a mental rehab facility to see if they can make him competent. Just dragging out the process.
Hang him, shoot him, be done with it. It would save money.

So this guy is cuckoo for cocoa puffs? Prisons and jails are full of these guys. I think they probably would have dumped him in anyway if this case wasn't so high profile. I have been present at more than one psych eval with an inmate before, and I can tell you that as soon as they walk in the door they are all hearing voices and have had the worst childhoods imaginable. We had one woman who stabbed her boyfriend to death, and once the trial got closer she took up smoking imaginary cigarettes and talking to air. When asked if I would be worried, I said no, imaginary cigarettes don't bother me, but when she has an imaginary knife then there would be room for concern.

Rdrbill,

Just my thoughts exactly. Hundreds of people witness him shoot and kill those innocent people who where just standing there listening to that lady talk and will never be right till the day she dies.

Try him, convict, and up against the wall. Why should he live a long life?

Call me if they don't have enough rifleman for the squad.

I can't figure out how a guy can plan out what he is going to do, buy a gun, get the hi cap mags, go somewhere else and buy ammo, load the gun, chamber a round, conceal gun on his person, make his way to the place of the impending act and carry out the act..................and then be determined to be insane.

Now go ahead and set me straight and show me the error of my ways. Just sayin'.........

In Maximumbob land we take him out back and shoot him so he is never a problem to anyone ever again. In reality he now lives a happy, comfortable, institutionalized, doped up existence of TV watching for the rest of his natural life. Because we are an advanced society that values human life...

Exactly,Notice that the only pic they show on the tube is the one where he's looking like Uncle Fester? He knew what he was doing and that it was wrong.Period.

Was this federal or state? Will it stand for both?

Too bad we've got that wacky old Constitution with all that crazy due process nonsense in it!

(Insert sarcastic smiley)

He belongs in the looney bin never to see the light of day. I don't mind getting rid of due process as long as I am the one who gets to arbitrarily decide who lives and who dies.

I have interacted with a fair number of these people as clients over the years when I was doing a private practice and one ot the questions I never could find an answer for was "who gets turned loose and who stays locked up". As Caj pointed out, Thorazine and it's relatives were responsible for clearing out about 85% of the occupants of the mental hospitals in the 50's and 60's. Unfortunately there is no way for them to be made to take their meds regularly and a lot relapsed.. Regularly.. I do not think that the AZ shooter deserves to be treated as a "normal person" which he is obviously not but I do not see our current treatment of these people as a satisfactory solution. Long term implants or long term chemical pumps.. I don't know but they need long term management from either the "State" or another entity.

Hanging is a form of long-term management that is more reliable than most of the others proposed.

This guy reminds me of the Robert Garrow who was a serial killer here in NY back in the 70's. After a large manhunt a couple of Forest Rangers and an Encon Officer caught up with him and got him twice with a 12 gauge. He lived but claimed he was paralyzed. Well, they stuck old Bob in a minimum security prison downstate that was more like a hospital. One day Bob just got out of that chair and walked out the front door with a .32 pistol his kid had snuck in a bucket of chicken. A couple days later the prison guys caught up with him and that .32 was no match for the number of holes they put in Bob Garrow.

Here's the problem: You finish him off, holster your weapon, and a voice from all around thunders "who put this **** on my lawn?"
