good morning all,
yesterday i met with a gentleman who was selling three handguns for a lady whose husband had passed on, i was drawn by a discription of a "really nice stainless 357" it turned out to be a 6"? m66 .nice, probably give it to my sweetheart, but when he pulled out the "cannon" i was impressed ! what a piece! really like the sights. before i left his house i made an offer (what the gentleman suggested was fair i have no desire to take advantage of a widow)
when i got home i tried to do some research on this 29 silouette gun and found that there were complaints about cylinders unlocking under recoil ...is this something to be concerned about or typical overblown internet hysteria?
i have made the offer and if accepted will make the purchase regardless...
the third piece is a hi-standard 22 autoloader. the three guns are a package only deal.

It does happen with heavy loads in the early guns. S&W made some changes to the locking bolt system, including the slots on the cylinder, to correct this in later guns. I've got a 8 3/8" M29-2 and never noticed it to be an issue.

Sounds like a great package. Enjoy them, particularly the M29 and Hi-Standard.

thanks for the reply. i thought it would be something like that ,i dont forsee shooting anything heavy ,just 240gr. american eagle at least til i start reloading ...

If you are talking about a model with the adjustable front and rear sight they are a great hunting handgun because you can zero them in for 4 different distances. I had a 8 3/8 inch Model 586 with that sight package and I'm sorry I sold it as it would have been a great handgun to deer hunt with.

yes , that is the piece im talking about ,those sights seem really fine (narrow) id like to try something like that on my m 17.
in canada we are not allowed to hunt with handguns so id use it just for looking cool at the rifle range...if i could just lure a pack of coyotes onto the rifle range ,id be set. (j.k.) there are always deer on our range. ive had to stop shooting til they graze past our targets! the gunfire does even phase them, theyre probably stone deaf by now ! haha

I owned a pair of the Model 29-3s with the adjustable sights. Although they were great shooters I ultimately sold them and bought a 6" Model 29 and a 6" 586 with the same silhouette sights. Both are more practical for my use and are used as test-beds for load development.

well id just want to see the look on peoples faces when i pull it out at the indoor range...
its probably not very practical ,but it looks so cool...

I got one the same way, old collector died and a friend knew him and I bought it from the widow, NIB, no cylinder ring, it was beautiful I kept it about five years abd traded it to a fellow in Indiana for a Pederson S/S 12 ga. that was made for Mossberg back in the mid-70's. This was the only S&W i have ever gotten rid of and i have hated doing it since. These were dropped in 92 or 93. Jeff

I had one of these years ago for shooting metallic silhouettes and love it. It replaced my 10 1/2" Super Blackhawk. As long as it was kept clean, it ran like a champ. I sent a lot of lead down range through it Ended up selling it to finance a trip to Colorado for elk.
