M 625- 45ACP roll call

Just a 625-6 JM here. Fun to shoot but has a canted barrel. Now that I’m starting to shoot IDPA, considering sending it in to get it fixed but it shoots so well I just can’t stand to part with it.

I have a 625-8 with a red dot on it. Lots to like about that setup.

I'd post a pic but it's pretty dirty right now. I don't clean my firearms as much as I should and I can never remember to get a pic after I clean them.

I shoot it often. You can tell by looking at it. No safe queen that one. I treat it like my lawn mower.

Like most people in this thread, I have multiple 625's. I have three in .45 ACP and one in .45 Colt.

I have a 5-inch 625-2 - Model of 1988 that I got when they first came out in March of 1989. Basically used as a plinker...

I have a three inch 625-3 that is a safe-queen (formerly owned by a LEO). It is wearing Spegel ebony boot grips...

And then there is the workhorse of the bunch. A four-inch 625-8 PC. It has the Tamer grip from the .460 Bear Emergency pack, a Bowen Rough Country rear sight and a Dawson FO front sight and the action has been "breathed on". I have used this for USPSA (until they let in the 8-shooters) and then, currently, IDPA. It has many thousands of rounds through it and is one of my favorites - actually I like all my 625's, 25's, 22's and my lone 325 PD...

The Gunbroker auctions prices seem a bit all over the place. What is a reasonable price for a 625 5" in 45acp?

Here is a good thread on these (older thread):

General ammo info at this thread What are you shooting in your 625?

------

And I get to repost my photos!

I have a 5-inch in .45 ACP. By far my FAVORITE Revolver to shoot. After seeing this thread, I now plan to take it shooting tomorrow.

---------------

Picked up this 625-2 "Model of 1989" a few years ago. That was a very good year for me, and I always wanted one of these. Replaced the front sight with a green fiber optic.

.45 ACP - 200 grain plated Ranier TC reloads, full moon clips, very mild. 3.8 grains Bullseye. Target load, drops 5-inches @ 25-yards. I could adjust the rear sight, but the pistol zeroed for my hunting load....

.45 Auto Rim - 250-grain lead Keith flat nose reloads with 7.0 grains Unique. Stout. I can hit the six-inch plate @ 100 yards at the club consistently with this one, holding over one bead.

Shot a deer at 75 yards (2016) using my 45 Auto Rim loads, one shot, dropped on the spot. I carved a notch in the grip. Extra special trip, hunting with my Dad!

I also have a 625-8, JM. Really like that gun. Added Hi-Viz front sight. Changed the stocks a few times. Pretty much plinking and falling plates. After having had to have a 25. Did! Bob

I got caught up in auction fever and paid more for mine (secondhand) than I have for Pythons. I "use" it for informal steel challenge shooting...

The accuracy is certainly adequate for that but, in rigorous bench shooting for load development, I found it's generally not as accurate as it's .44mag stablemate...

And comparing it to another 45ACP revolver I found it can't hold a candle to my 5" Ruger Blackhawk. Still, it's a keeper, while the 3" .44 has moved on.

My 5" 625-7 Performance Center in 45acp is a contender for my favorite revolver. Hammer and trigger are forged, and firing pin is frame mounted but pre-lock. I got it second hand in 2020 and have put a lot of rounds through it in ICORE competitions. It has a JMR serial with all 0s and a single digit.

Here is it in action in a side by side steel race: https://streamable.com/xh195n (before I started reloading so I'm shooting full power factory 230gr ball)

I’ve got three .45acp revolvers. Shown here are two of them, both 4” 625-8’s . The bobbed hammer one is a JM model. I picked that one up to shoot steel plate at my local club . The third .45 acp that I own is a 6” 25-2 All are excellent and damn fun guns to shoot !

I’ve got a 5” 625-3 that I shoot pretty regularly. Just target shooting at the range, nothing competitive. It’s a great gun to shoot, and accurate. I just recently started shooting .45 Super in it on occasion. I really like shooting moon clipped revolvers and have several others, including a 1917, 1937 Brazilian Contract, 5” and 6” Model 610’s and a Ruger SRH in 10mm.

Does your 625-3 have the ball detent like this one of mine does? I have wondered whether it is factory or part of an accuracy job. Shown are the ball and the detent.
The action and trigger are as smooth as any I've ever felt so maybe? It shoots like a rifle with my cast bullet loads. Probably my favorite gun. This bullet turns a little auto rim into a thumper.

This is one of my favorite S&W revolvers - a 625-2 Model of 1988 that I have customized to my tastes and treated to an action job by Nelson Ford.

It now has the smoothest double action pull of any of my revolvers (including a Colt Python) and it's extremely accurate. It makes an excellent reliable home protection gun (with moon clips loaded for reloads), and it's a great field gun as well. It also competes with my 25-2 target revolver quite handily.

John
