M 625- 45ACP roll call

The 3" 625 in 45ACP I have was bought here from the late Chuck Lubbe. I also have the JM 625 that has a wonderful double action trigger. Either you like moon clips OR you simply do not know what you are missing. Having said that, you need the proper moon clip tools to see the true advantage.

625-3...the last S&W I'd ever sell. Saw a 3" w. box at a recent gun show marked at $1K. Not a bad price these days.

I had a 4" version I settled on in lieu of the 3" one. I shot a LOT of .45Super's from BB and UnderWood out of her. I shouldn't have sold that one truth be told. I love MoonClip'd Equipped Revo's. Darn near as fast a reload with Hard Cast Keith's and their HC profiled pills as it is to change a magazine is in my beloved 1911's.

This has been a wonderful thread from which I've learned much - mainly that people like the 625.

My question is: what makes them so beloved?

What about them makes them so good for the styles of competition in which they are popular? I've heard said the large diameter makes the cartridges easy to load. A lot of guys have commented on their accuracy. Is there something inherent that design that makes them more accurate than, say, a K frame in 38 special? Does the combination of 45 ACP shot through an N-frame make for an especially nice shooting experience?

There is a model 625 ( not sure the dash number ) at my lgs. It's got the colorful grips on it. It's been sitting there for months and I keep passing it by. Reading this long thread makes me think I just didn't know what I was looking at!

I'm a fan of revolvers chambered for .45acp.

So far my 625 line up is:

625-3 3"

I shoot a lot of ACP in revolvers. It is a very accurate combination and the large bullets and chambers make for easy reloading of the cylinder.

I competed in PPC, with a K frame 38 reworked by Davis. Great revolver, very accurate and no noticeable recoil. I also used a Model 25-2. The recoil was noticeably more and by the end of the match, I was fatigued and my scores showed it. I was not shooting handloads and in hindsight, I should have developed some 210 grain target loads just for the purpose.

But, even so, the ACP, N frame is a great revolver!

If you decide to pass, there are many who would like to know how much and where to send funds!

Out of the one's owned, like the 3 in the best! It took the top spot from the Mt gun.

Big bore thumpers are just fun to shoot! :D

Sounds like a 625-8 Performance Center model. I affectionately call those "clown grips".

As soon as I got mine home I took off those grips & hid them in a dark corner of the closet, never to be see the light of day again. :p

FYI: This model has a slightly short cylinder, & an extended barrel breach, than a standard 625 does, which gives the bullet a shorter jump to the barrel. No biggie one way or the other, IMO.

Found a decent deal on mine a couple of years ago and decided to put a RDS on it for back yard plinking. Very nice gun that needs to be taken out more often.

Interesting thread, lots of great revolvers here. Heard years ago the 625 is everything the model 25’s should have been.

Have 2 of em, one is called the Bank Note. Found at Tulsa, a bucket list trip yrs ago. Has a set of Keith Brown hide out grips in some kind of nice walnut just made a year ago.

Second is a PC 625 with a 5 1/2” barrel with hand honed broach rifling. Very accurate gun, limited production. Sat in the classified for 9 months before I bought it, tired of seeing it bumped to the top. Larry

I have a 625-8 that originally started out with the 5" underlug barrel:

I picked up a 4" Mountain Gun barrel (Unmarked) from Midway USA and had that installed:

I also picked up a pancake rig from Lobo Gun Leather. Very handy set up for checking fences at our ranch in New Mexico:

I’ll add mine, just purchased 625-3, 5”, Model Of 1989. Haven’t shot it yet, will report back when I do, hopefully soon.

FYI I bought it off GB for $900 plus fees. Swapped out the OEM Pach’s for the VZs myself. This thing feels like a bank vault, I already love it.

I just spent what is probably too much for a Performance Center 625-8 4". It was out of state and the end label was marked with the California approved SKU. The roster approval expires next month and I guarantee S&W isn't renewing it on a revolver they haven't made in years.

I hemmed and hawed on a 5" at a semi-local gun store earlier this year until it sold to someone else.

I'll try to remember to post pictures when it comes in.

As far as I know these were the last of the common production 45ACP revolvers to go.

In researching it they don't appear in the 2021 catalog so 2020 was likely when they stopped production. (LOL, time flies :p)
