Just put it on the head of the snake. There will be more than enough left in the bore. If you can see it inside the barrel, that's too much.

Right now all I can find is CCI so you might be right. Can't get any Fed 550 pack for practice. All the CCI-MM goes for my pistol competition, all the CCI-Tactical goes for my 15-22s, and all the CCI-SV goes for my Rem 597. Have not shot a practice round except at an unused bay while shooting a match since all this panic started. Almost temped to buy some Rem GB. Good for practicing clearing problems anyway.

I generally don't put anything on the snake I use for my .22LR firearms, since I don't use lead ammo. No copper gets into the barrel and only on my .22 pistols does some shaving get on the breech face. One reason I have 2 snakes, 1 for .22LRs and 1 for .223. And just for info a CMMG conversion on an AR does leave lots of crud in the .223 chamber, including copper. So on that I do use Hoppe's after shooting a bunch of .22 in it.
Just took the 15-22 to the range today, ran thru 150 rounds flawlessly!
Came home and tried to clean it, wondered why the rod/patch felt so tight running it thru...apparently the extractor is very close to the bore...my stainless rod was scratched by the extractor...left me very surprised and upset - what can i do? Is this normal? Grrr
Any help would be appreciated.
Try using a Tipton .17 caliber carbon fiber rod.

Copper solvent? What for? .22s do not leave copper fouling in barrels, even the copper washed ones.

All .22 LR bullets ARE lead - what covers them is a thin copper wash.

I use these exact rounds for the exact same guns. The 597 was my first rifle. I've used my 25 rounder in the 597 so much I ended up having to trim a little around the lips where the rounds are inserted. Anyway, to the point, I went through about 5k rds before its first cleaning and never once had an issue that wasn't mag related.

i find it funny people who clean their barrels after 500 rounds. G&A did an interview with McMillan of McMillan barrels and he was quite candid and said "i love it when people do the 'break in procedure' listed in the manual of their rifles and when they use cleaning rods to get the bore/barrel spotless, it gives me lot's more business replacing their barrels that the shooter themselves have ruined by over cleaning"
can't remember when i actually scrubbed down any of my 'shooters'. now OTOH my safe queens are spotless as they should be, but i may clean my hunting AR's, .22's and SG's maybe once a year, bolt when i see that it is getting dirty, i don't consider running a bore snake with some brake cleaner on it cleaning, so i may do that after 500 rounds if i remember.
