I thoght it would be a good idea to survey M&P 15-22 owners to find out how many owners have had to send their guns back to Smith & Wesson for repair and for what reason.

Please take a minute to answer the poll. Thanks...

I've had mine about 3 weeks. First 100 rounds were CCI mini-mags. The next 150 - 200 rounds have been Federal Value Pack from WW. I have had maybe three malfunctions total, fail to feed or fail to fire.

The last 100 round were flawless. Put me on the glad I bought it list, so far.

it was doing fine and had about 800 rounds thru it. I could live with the occasional bent cartridges and FTF which could be due to the ammo or magazine. It had to go back because it started going "full auto" on me. It's been with them since Friday and I cant wait for it's homecoming. I have a smorgasbord of bullets waiting for it's return.

I now have 10k+ rounds through mine.

A. It has always extracted/ejected superbly.
B. The magazine catches about 5-6 of 500 rounds
C. Accuracy sucks
D. Never sent back to S&W
E. Most fun rifle

Full auto sounds like fun

Ive run about 600 now and maybe 5 stoves and this rifle is accurate inthe right hands at 50 yrds I love it

im with Rangenrob ive shot maybe 1000 rounds so far give or take a few and its seems as long as I load the mag right i dont have any feed issues. But every once in a while i will have a failure to eject the spent round. but my friends AR15 has the same problem too. his failed to pull the whole casing out of the barrel last week.

Its a good gun but as with any mass produced item there are bound to be a few bad ones. this goes for any thing from legos to vehicles nothing is perfect but as long as the manufacturer is willing to fix any problem under warranty then its all good

yep, seems like i was one of the first on here to send there's back. Got mine on Sept. 4th, shipped back to s&w on the 8th. Got it back in October. On the paper work, said they replaced the Extractor. Ive had zero issues since its return, i absolutely love the 15-22.

Bought mine on Election Day anniversary (Bushmaster last year on day after election). Finally put ~125 or so rounds thru it. No issues. Maybe I got one that had the mysterious upgrade. Anyway, really looking forward to warm weather so I can go run a bunch of rounds thru it.

M&P 15-22 Survey

I have had mine for about a month and have shot several hundred rounds through it now. I have had only a couple of malfunctions and those were ammo related, not the gun. Mine shoots extremely well but I had to test several brands of ammo to find one that would group well. It really likes the CMP (Black Box) Golden Eagle.

I HIGHLY recommend the MP15-22 !!

I hope I don't have to ever send it back because I've already done trigger job and would hate to loose my parts as I'm sure S&W would send back with factory unmodified hammer and sear.

Off topic.
As cheap as AR trigger parts are on line or at a gun show, it might be a good idea to pick up some spare parts. In the unlikely event you have to send your rifle back to S&W, you could pull your modified trigger and put in OE parts.

Extractor and Ejector Issue

I haven't had to send my MP15-22 back to S&W, but after about 400 rounds I began experiencing frequent stove pipes, then once found my extractor sticking out from the bolt at 90 degrees. It fell out into my hand when I touched it, but all the parts were still there, i.e., the spring and the little flat bar behind the extractor. I reinstalled the extractor and continued to have one to five stove pipes per magazine with seven different magazines. I tweaked the ejector bar with a screwdriver and now have shot several hundred more rounds without a single stove pipe. I have second MP15-22 that has been flawless. So overall I am quite satisfied with the MP15-22. As for being accurate, I have no complaints with them.

Thanks for the input Tbat!

By chance can you tell any difference between your two 15-22 bolt assemblies? Does the extractor on the bolt look the same?

I'm curious to know if Smith & Wesson made a change to the extractor or if it's the same? If there has not been a design change, the extractor could end up being a common failure.

IMO, It would be alot easier to get just the extractor from them rather than sending in the whole gun.

I can't really tell any difference between the bolt assemblies of the two rifles, the extractor seems the same on both and has the same feel. The rifle that I had the problems with has the serial number DSZ3***, from Academy, and the other one without issues has the serial number DSX1***, from a local sporting goods store, so I doubt that the problem free one is of more recent manufacture. The back side of the ejector is more squared on the DSX, whereas it is angled on the DSZ gun, but that shouldn't make any difference as that is not the contact point with the spent casings. LOL, perhaps I just got lucky with the second MP15-22. I bought these about a month apart so not likely to have any design changes.

I have read somewhere that the extractor on the S&W semiauto .22 pistol is the same as that on the S&W MP15-22, but I don't have a S&W pistol to confirm if that is so.

what did you do exactly with the extractor? ive had a couple of stovepipes, but not really enough to warrant ripping it down yet. when it does happen, it seems like the extractor wants to hang onto the shell, causing a stovepipe. anyone experiencing that? any fixes?

I merely reinstalled the extractor, I made no adjustmets to the extractor. It was the ejector bar that I adjusted with a screwdriver. I just inserted a flat blade screw driver between the ejector and the upper housing and attempted to move the ejector ever so slightly inward. You don't have to get rough with it as you could probably break off the ejector if your not careful. It was a trial and error process and took two or three attempts to get it right, but once successful the results were impressive. You can note your progress by looking at the open upper upside down with the bolt installed. I have seen postings on this board or another as to the procedure with pictures, I will try to post a link if I can find it again.

I got mine on 11/29/2009 and have had no problems so far. I have only used Winchester Wildcat .22LR plated HPs in the gun and they run flawlessly. However, we have had so durn much snow I can't get to shoot it now.

I've had mine since early October. Found it at a gun show in Ft. Worth, TX for $430 OTD. I've put around 2000 rounds through it so far and the only troubles were with Federal "Auto-Match" 325 pack from Wal-Mart. Lots of doubles and one triple with this low-power load. Some rounds wouldn't even cycle the bolt enough to eject the round! With Winchester, CCI Mini Mags, old Remington grey tips and Federal 550 bulk packs I've had nothing but fun. Mike in TX :D
