M&P 9 EZ problem

Picked up a 9EZ at a local gun store running a sale I couldn't pass up. I ran a box of 115 gr. FMJ's through it today. Every thing was great until the last three mags and the slide locked back with the last round still in the mag. Anybody got any ideas or should I run some more ammo in it before contacting the factory. I have other M&P's and none have done this.

Have you checked your grip? The only other time I've ever heard of this type of problem was a person that was inadvertently putting pressure on the slide lock. It was pistol-specific, and he needed to grind away the slide lock tab on one side of the pistol to rectify.

Make sure you aren’t hitting the slide stop with your thumb when shooting.
There have been a number of threads mentioning the above issue. Also
a tight grip is important on that gun. I have XXL hands and so I don’t use the thumb over thumb grip for that reason.
Peak53 is right, but don’t forget to take the mags apart and check for burrs or rough spots. I go through all new mags and have found followers with
extra plastic on them that needed trimmed.
I have a EZ 9mm and love it!

I clean and lube all my new firearms before I ever fire a shot. After the first time it did it. I made a concerted effort to not let my thumb get close to the slide lock lever. I was going to remove the little plastic deals that supposed to help you load the mags but I think that is what goes up and hits the slide lock so that is out. I am going to try and remove a little of the material on the top of the one that pushes up and see if that helps. On a road trip right now so I will have to wait till I get back home to try it.

Likely a dumb comment so apologies in advance, but could the grip safety (ie lack of enough pressure) somehow cause the slide to lock back instead of completing it’s motion?

I have not had any issues with my EZ, but as my EZ is my first gun with a grip safety I am still learning on what it may or may not affect.

Try this:

• remove the slide
• place a round in the magazine
• insert the magazine in the frame

If the magazine does not push up the slide stop, the magazine tab is definitely not the problem.

In the photo below, a round in the magazine pushes the follower down (yellow line) a greater distance than the height of the tab (blue line).

I put 10 more mags through the gun today. The slide locked back three times with rounds in the mag. Two times with one in the mag and one time with two still in the mag. I only loaded 5 rounds in the mags at a time to get more mags through it with the ammo I had with me. I paid special attention to keeping my thumb away from the slide lock but I was pretty sure that wasn't the problem anyway. I fired 3 of the mags from a sandbag rest to see what kind of groups it would produce. They were acceptable except way left. I got the rear site as far as I dare go to the right. I am going to have to get the front site pushed left some.

I know the gun is under warranty, but if you have a gunsmith nearby, I would have him take a look at it.
The mag follower is what pushes up the slide lock after the last round is fired. If you put in an empty mag, the slide should lock back every time, otherwise, it should never lock back with ammo in the mag.
From a sand bag, you shouldn’t be having trigger control issues (some folks pull their shots and I had a new 9mm Shield that shot left 2” for everyone that shot it from a rest). Have someone else shoot it and see if they have the same results you are getting. I check all my new guns groups at 10 yards, but that’s me. You shouldn’t have to move your rear sight that much. JMO My 9mm EZ sights were right on horizontally but shot low 1” if you used the three dots (factory miss drilled front sight dot). If you lined up the top of the front and rear sight it was POA=POI. I painted the front sight yellow and painted back sight dots with Testor's flat black model paint.
If it’s something simple, the gunsmith should be able to find it, then he can fix it or tell you to send it back to S&W. JMO

Think I solved my problem with slide locking back. When we pushed the front sight I noticed that there was a slight burr on the lock lever. I little work with a jewelers file and I put 8 mags thru it yesterday with no problems. I do thing the spring is too light that hold the lock lever down though.
