I shot a Shield today (not mine), it is very new, and shot my six-year-old M&P Compact as well, The M&P trigger is noticeably better. I do not remember if it has slowly gotten better over time, probably a bit.

Are the Shield triggers that much worse or did my buddy get a stinker? Or should it wear in and become smoother?

I can only speak for the Shield 45 in comparison to my 45 Compact and 40 Compact and I can say with certainty that my Shield 45 trigger was way better out of the box than the other two even after 1000 rounds through them. So, they got the Apex treatment... ;)

I was comparing my new Shield 45 (200 rounds) and my 40c (900 rounds) and found my 40c had a much smoother take up and break than my new Shield.

M&P Compact versus Shield trigger

Yup I noticed the same both my M&P 9c also a 45c both have a super smooth trigger when compared with the gritty trigger of the shield.

It looks like the results vary all over the place. My Shield 9 trigger was perfect right out of the box. My 40c trigger, in contrast, was quite gritty, but improved to very smooth between 500 and 1000 rounds. I then thought it was perfect until I developed some arthritis in my trigger hand. That forced me to lighten the pull with an Apex DCAEK conversion. Now it is perfect again. Finally, my new Shield 45 is smooth, with a crisp break, but it's quite stiff, and it's causing me to pull my shots. I'm going to give it another 400-500 rounds to see if it improves (I have 180 through it now). If not, I'll Apex it.

Aren't the factory triggers for all these guns essentially the same assembly that just gets dropped into the frame?

That is my assumption. But sometimes something about a derivative design forces something else out of whack. It sounds like a there is gun to gun variation, and explains why some posters on this forum love their stock triggers and others hate them. Sounds like Shields and M&Ps have equal chance of getting praised or criticized.

The trigger on my Shield 45 is better new than any trigger on any other M&P that I've owned: full size, compact, and Shields in .45, 40, and 9mm. That is relative, though, because I haven't found any of the M&P triggers to be bad. Granted, none are 1911 good, but still not bad. I've never tried putting in a trigger kit, because I didn't find the triggers bad and because I don't believe in modifying the fire control group. That's just me...YMMV.

I installed the Apex kit and Shield 45 trigger difference is night and day. I was considering selling the Sheild due to how much I disliked the trigger. It still makes me wonder how there are so many different reports both good and bad on the M&P triggers, aren't they all manufacturered at S&W with the same components? I'm wondering if date of manufacture does indeed make a difference, mine was purchased in December 2016.

I own both and both are smooth. However, my compact trigger is noticeably heavier than my Shield.

I wish I had a better pick, stock sear is the top, Apex bottom.
