Prices are falling fast. Sports are now available for $ 670, the T is available for $1K and the 15TS is available for $1250.

I think it might be time to finally pull the trigger. I was looking at the T or TS, but for a Sport at $ 670 plus if I add the Troy drop in battle rail at $150, that only puts me at a $820 investment for a brand new railed M&P. Not bad and $180 cheaper than the T. Yes, I know the Sport is lacking the FA and dust cover and the rail is not free floating, but still a great price for that setup.

Thoughts? Am I on the right track here?

I think you are! I just paid $850 for a sport! I couldn't find anything cheaper than that locally so I sucked it up. Luckily I have a lot of parts so I don't have to spend a whole lot on upgrades.

I have gotten some deals on other guns so I figured you win some you lose some.

I would just say make sure you buy what you want and obviously what you can afford. Not have a dust cover or FAS doesn't bother me one bit but I have some friends that just can't stand it, although they thoroughly enjoyed shooting mine! haha

Get what you want

Get exactly what you want. Otherwise you will have spent money and still want something. If you get what you want, you'll have spent money AND you'll be satisfied. Obviously what you want needs to be something you can afford, otherwise adjust what you want to be something you can afford. If what you want is something you can afford, but just not immediately - wait. It'll be worth it to get exactly what you want.

Kadonny, I dont see any military service behind your name so I do not figure your married to a F/A or Dustcover. If you look for deals you can free float that Sport Barrel and still be under the price of the T or the TS. I do agree that you want to get what you want but I dont believe the lack of those things are a deal breaker. The best thing a Forward Assist does in the civilian world is allow you to jam a round into the chamber without having to see why it isn't just seating. My time in the Marine Corps we were advised to not use the thing, it was far safer to get rid of that round than to jam your rifle up. The forward assist and the dust cover were band-aids applied to the rifle when they were first issued and the soldiers were told they didn't need cleaning. But do get what you want and enjoy it!

My thinking as well, good call. I'm far from married to those, first time AR buyer here. I originally wanted the T or TS for the rail, not necessarily for the FA and cover, but now that the pricing of the sport is really dropping, it pays to buy a sport and then add a quality rail like the Troy.

Thanks for the terrific advice.

Picked up a new M&P15 Sport a few weeks ago for $750 out the door... Happy with it so far.

I just picked up a 15X with a Magpul PRS stock for under $1K today. Sooooo happy with the new purchase. It pays off to make friends with the managers of the LGS!

Sports in my area are sub $700 now. I paid $724 for mine in Febuary.

I have run about 100 rounds through mine and love it.

I paid 839 for my sport back in March. I figure I guess you could wait for prices to go down further, but these days they could just as easily go right back up fast.

Damn, just saw an OR for $799. Makes the decision a bit harder, but with the OR I have to get sights/optic.

You're all lucky! I jailed a M&P15T last week for $1300 here in San Diego. It was the only one I could find. Maybe the California version is more expensive, but it's around $1100 MSRP on the S&W website. LGS said the distributor had raised the prices above that.

Don't think you'll miss the FA or dust cover. I have a class III Colt and a S&W MOE and have never used the FA on either. Ammo starting to come around. Enjoy your gun. Nice thing with the Sport is you can add accessories at your leisure. Everyone I know with a Sport have no regrets.

Yeah, you won't miss the FA unless you need it.... ;)

I hope to find a Sport sometime this year.
