Well,I bought one last year because of the
different sized palmswell grips making it feel so much better than a Glock, you don't have to pull the trigger before field stripping (it has
a sear disconnect lever at the top of the magwell),ease of field stripping/clean/oil,
Novak sights/night sights,plenty of after-market
goodies and it just eats whatever I feed it!

As above plus-
Smith's info convinced me that they had put everything they could into the most modern update of the plastic gun.
Felt really good in my hand, natural pointer. Changeable backstraps so I could use it to teach a younger shooter. Pretty decent trigger. I think it is the only good looking polymer pistol. S&W's customer service...

Low bore-line so there's no muzzle flip.

Very easy to take down and put back together.

17-round capacity.

DAO, no safety.

That pretty much sums up why I bought a M&P9...then added a M&P45 FS a couple of months later.

My 5'2" 110# GF (who I hope doesn't ever read that posted her weight!

) thinks that both the 9 and the 45 are softer shooting than the other pistols in those calibers, that she has shot.

The ergonomics, trigger, ease of disassembly & reassembly are the real pluses of the M&P9 vs competitive plastic framed guns.
