i have been looking for a good concealable 40 cal pistol and im almost set on the M&P Shield.

i was looking for input by others who have or have had this pistol, their opinion either good or bad.

let me know more about this gun to help me decide if this is what i should get.

The gun is great, easy to conceal, pocket carry (if you have big pockets apparently I don't)

Reliability for me has been flawless except one user error (wife limp wristed it)

I personally cannot shoot straight with it nor can my wife or a friend although with practice I am getting closer to bulls eye (I've had Springfield XD's for 4 years and am used to the size trigger etc.) I have the 9mm barrel and magazines and these help with cheap target practice, still no malfunctions with 9mm either.

Negatives are availability! When you find one you will be lucky to pay MSRP as I did at $449 but others have them for much higher. Also magazine availability, I only have the magazines that came with the .40. Tried to find some .40's but usually out of stock or overpriced.

Also another con for me I think it is too small for my hand I put a hogue grip on and makes it better. The trigger itself i am not a fan of. I dislike the safety mechanisma nd again that's being used to XD and just more practice needed.

Apex Tactical has a replacement AEK aluminum trigger and is coming outwith the poly version sometime this month per their blog -- in case you want to try a different trigger. I haven't tried it, but with the positive reviews, I am considering it ( along with an Apex sear and USB).

I have nothing but praise for the .40 Shield. Compact, easy to carry/conceal, comfortable in the hand, nice trigger, easy to shoot accurately, safety, 100% reliable. What's not to love?

One complaint: Very hard to find, and expensive when you do.

The Shield 40 is a great little carry gun. It is light weight, compact, accurate and reliable. Get one if you can find it in stock.

So far so good on mine. Picked it up at academy a couple weeks ago for $399. I've only run 150 rounds through her but not a hiccup yet. Going to try some SD ammo this weekend. Great feel both holstered and to shoot. No problems with accuracy.

Considering one myself..my favorite local dealer has one...I'd like to add a couple questions for you guys who have them...I currently carry the 40c..how is the recoil comparable in the slimmer frame? Is the size difference worth the difference from the 40c?

EDIT...So currently just left dealer with it..decided to not take the chance of waiting and grab it...gonna try it out...not like I'll have a problem selling it if I need to..

Great pistol. Very light weight and flat. Carry mine in a Fox Holster every day.

Recoil is not near what u would expect from a small frame big cal. I believe the dual recoil spring is what helps in this general area, as compared to other small frame bigger cal weapons. It is honestly one of the best carry weapons in a small frame that money can buy.

Note: If you bought the 40, u can also swap out the barrel for 9mm barrel and 9mm mags. You basically can have both guns in one. I like bringing mine to the range considering I have tons of 9mm from other weapons. I use the .40 for practice at time and always EDC the .40. But the 9mm just brings a little added flavor to it and makes a little cheaper plinking. And if u cant find 9mm rds, u look for .40. If u cant find .40, u look for 9mm. And if u cant find 9mm or .40, well welcome to the ObummmaNation.

Got it home and fondled it side by side with my 40c..size wise..other than the obvious slimmer frame...it isn't so drastically different. Gonna stick it IWB for a few days and give it a test ride, but at first feel (without yet shooting) I'm not sure if the small difference in width is worth the loss of rounds.

I've wondered about this also; I have run into this with the 3rd generation pistols and it wasn't worth it for me. I too have a M&P40C that I routinely carry and just don't think it would be worth it to get the Shield. The Shield is 3 ozs. lighter than the 40c empty. I'll be curious to hear what you find.

Cheers,
Sam

So I was able to go put some lead down range yesterday and have been IWB carrying it for a couple days around the house just to get a feel...here are my first impressions...The Shield 40 is a great shooter for a 40 of the size...all but disappears IWB..I put 100rds without so much as a hiccup. After my first 2 mags through it I felt like, hey, recoil isn't too bad, not much more than my 40c. The grip was a little smooth and thin for my liking though. After the 4th or 5th mag through it, it started to wear on me having to tighten my grip to get a good hold on it (I have larger hands). For a CCW weapon this really would have no affect on my decision because it is highly unlikely that you would ever get into a defense situation where you would be shooting 4 or more mags through your CCW in a gun fight! (At least I would hope not). As far as accuracy, I was every bit as accurate with it as my 40c from 7yds. Without going into too much more detail here is what I concluded..personally for me I don't think I will be keeping it. I'm 6' and 210lbs, for me it is too large for pocket carry. When carrying IWB it really isn't anymore comfortable than my 40c, definitely not to forego 3-4 extra rds. That and with my 40c I carry a 15rd full size mag with x-grip for a spare giving me even more fire power. If I didn't already have a 40c I probably would love it and keep it, but for me it just isn't small enough to fit a separate niche from my 40c. Take my opinion for what its worth, everyone is different and has their own preferences.

there are some OWB holsters for the Shield. a DeSantis, mini scabbard, retention holster has a forward CANT on it. the retention is adjustable. bought it when holsters were hard to find/purchase. it can be bought in tan or black. right or left handed. IM me and i can give you the vendor and item # of the right hand. some of the dye is coming off from use. also holds the Shield close to the body. ^^^^^ i agree w/ the other guys and their posts.

Shield

The only problem I have had with my 40cal shield is having the extended mag dropping down when firing. I have sent it to the factory for testing etc. I will let you know the out come.
What is a dimple mag?
