I just received a real nice No Thumb safety M&P 9mm Shield
Pistol it shoots great I like the gun.

When the gun is together the mag will always engage the slide stop lever to hold the slide open.

When the gun is together with the mag out I can always engage the slide stop lever by simply pushing it up with my thumb.

The problem is when reassembling the weapon by the book the slide stop WILL NOT EVER engage to hold my slide OPEN so I can pop up the take down lever and complete reassembly.

I can pull the slide to the rear and pop it up but every video I see people are able to pull the slide to the rear engage the slide stop with a simple upward movement of the thumb, they simply pop the take down lever up and the pistol is reassembled.

Do I need to send this pistol to S&W to get it fixed ?

I am following the exact directions from the M&P manual that came with this pistol.

Thank for any help.

You post is a bit confusing. Can you or can you not rack the slide all the way to the rear and push up on the slide lock?

Yes when the pistol is assembled.

No when the pistol is being reassembled.

You can rack the slide but the (slide lock) will not move up during reassembly.

Sounds like the spring orientation...it's probably not allowing the slide to go back the last 1/4 inch. The end of the "twisted" spring should be on top when looking at the spring during re-assembly. There are a few threads with close up pics of the orientation. My Shield will not lock all the way back unless the spring is oriented correctly.

Yes, the spring seems to want to be positioned so that the end is in a 6 o'clock position in relation to the barrel and slide when seen as upright.

Again, I'll suggest the "ladies" method of racking the slide. Hold the slide firmly with your support hand. Push the frame forward with your strong hand, and click up the slide lock. It works.

I found that pulling the trigger, if it is forward, also makes everything fall in place.

When the pistol is assembled I can pull the slide to the rear with the magazine in place and the slide stop will engage and hold the slide open.

Also when the pistol is assembled and I pull the slide to the rear I can push the slide stop up with my thumb and it will hold the slide to the rear.

My problem is after disassembly when I am re-assembling the pistol, I have no problem pulling the slide all the way to the rear, the problem is, I can not lift the slide stop UP to hold the slide open.

You're probably just a hair shy of having it back far enough to lock back. Try pushing the slide back by placing the fore-end of the slide against something solid, such as a counter top. Also you might try rotating the recoil assembly a 1/4 turn and see if it helps. Mine was very stiff when I first got it.

BINGO Problem is fixed thank you.:)

I really like this pistol, I've been using the Glock 26 since 1996 and I never thought I would even conceder changing, then S&W came out with the M&P Shield, I didn't like the thumb safety but then they removed the thumb safety, that was the deciding factor.

I still will keep my trusty Glock 26 but I believe my new M&P Shield will be my most used carry gun to date.

Does anyone have any IWB Holster recommendations for me ?

Many of us have had problems getting the slide back with our new Shields and have written similar posts. We all learned it gets better the more rounds you put through the gun. If there is an answer to a problem with a S&W, you will find it on this forum. They have helped me immensely whenever I am stumped.

Glad I could help!

I carry my Shield 40 in a Bianchi Allusion™ Model 135 Suppression™. With it's mesh covered foam backing it's very comfortable and is cool in the summer. I really like the C-Clips, unlike a lot of holster clips they are very inconspicuous. Prior to getting the Shield I carried my 40c in one as well. They run in $50-$60 range. Standby for many more recommendations!

Well I think this pistol will be a fine carry piece.

I renewed my membership at the pistol range for another year so I plan to get lots of trigger time in this year.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

Now I'm shopping for a IWB holster, I don't want the spend lots of money on 20 holsters hoping to find a good Kidex or leather holster the first time around. ;)

Thanks,
AlfredB

Sound good thanks. :)

N8 2 Pro. (Nate Squared Pro) I use one daily, have a physical job requiring LOTS of activity, even crawling on the floor. Comfortable, light weight, tuck-able and an adjustable cant.
What's not to like?

For my Shield, I've tried a few holsters, but have settled on a custom (only $49.00) holster from Gavin at Firearmholster.com He does custom stitching, colors, etc. It is leather, but has a sweat shield in between, and fleece backing for comfort. Love it so much, I have two for my Shield...brown leather (fade to black), and a black/Carbon kydex.

Also great is a Latour custom, which I wear sometimes also. I started off with single clip leather hybrid, but have settled on a double clip hybrid for wearing all day. I'm in retail, and customers never know I'm carrying.

I ordered one yesterday, I also ordered a mag carrier for my other side.
Thanks to everyone on this board for all the help.

Smith should be ashamed of this design. Everytime I take mine apart, I have to screw with it to get it back together. That recoil assembly is about the cheapest thing I have ever seen in a gun.

You'll love it! I just ordered another for my M&P 9 Full size! Email Gavin if you want double stitching and various color options...he'll hook you up.

I did, I ordered double red stitching on black leather.
How long does it take him to make it and send it out ?
