Hey guys my Shield PC Ported has only about 80 rounds through it but I have had about 4 or 5 failure to feed problems. Is this a thing because it's new? Shoulds I just fire a couple hundred rounds and break it in more? Are all M&P's like this? I only ask because it's my CCW. Thanks.

What happens when it fails to feed? Does it jam on the feed ramp? Fail to strip a round from the mag? The 2nd could be "break-in" related, the first probably not. Has it happened with more than one mag? No, it isn't normal. I wouldn't consider a gun good to go for carry until I had 500 consecutive flawless rounds through it.

Its best to use something else as your edc until you get this resolved. Murphy has a way of showing up at the worst times.

As with overkill in the responses, you must clean the pistol before use. Next is a simple one, it is a new firearm to you. Before going nuclear here, get an experienced shield user to put a couple of mags through it. If they all fire properly, it is just that you probably need to get used to the proper grip and handling. lastly, it might be the ammo. Even in the same pistol, it might "like" a different type or weight ammo than your are used to. Try some 124 gr or even 147. see if it works better. If you do all of these , and still have problems, then call S&W. good luck and good shooting

OP, has his happened with all mags or just one? What ammo were you using; new or reload, and what caliber and grain? And did anyone else try it with similar results (as already noted having another shooter run some ammo thru it for comparisons can help as well). Knowing more details could narrow it down for you.
As for question if all MP's do this for me I'd have to say no. Not one issue in 2500 rounds thru my full size and compact 9's and so far no issues with my Shield PC 9.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. Here's more info:

- I did clean it and lube it before my first session at the range.

-I have only used the extended 7+1 mag that it came with. Not the 6+1.

- It failed to feed on the ramp. Basically had 3/4 of a bullet hanging out of the barrel at an angle.

- The ammo I was using was 180 grain Blazer Brass FMJ.

- My buddy shot it and had a jam as well. He is not an experienced Shield owner though.

You must fine what ammo it will not have failures with before you carry. You probably want to carry some good SD rounds so you also need to run a bunch of those through the gun to be sure of getting no failures. Then you need to find a practice round that is near the performance of the carry rounds. The shape of the bullet and the over all length of the ammo can effect feeding. If all this fails it is time to call CS.

Did you check the magazine springs?

SW had a recent known issue of bad magazine springs where the smaller diameter collapse into the larger diameter spring section causing failures.

I had the same issue of FTFeed on a new Shield that was manufactured 04/2016. SW sent me 3 new replacement springs which resolved the FTF.

Fortunately, you went and ran rounds through your firearm before trusting it. I'm more concern with those that blindly purchase a firearm and trust it without putting at least 200 rounds to test reliability.

Yeah I carry the Hornady Critical Defense for my Shield. They're just spendy so I haven't ran them through my gun yet. That's a solid idea though to make sure they run through it with no issues.

Hmm okay, I'll check into this as well. I'm going to try different ammo, grains etc.

Your issue might be either the lips on the magazine or the feed ramp and cylinder needs polishing, or both need attention. Try the 6+1 mag with different ammo. No such thing as 180 grain 9mm (must be 115 or 124 grain Blazer.) Just buy a box of Winchester 115 grain FMJ and try that.

I thought the same thing but if he has 6 and 7 round mags, then he's probably got .40 and not 9mm.

Also, both of my magazines seem to not be flush with the bottom as seen above. This normal? The trigger also sometimes feels like there is a clunk or hang up before firing and then sometimes it's completely smooth all the way through. I don't get it.

I'm going to take my gun out shooting again tomorrow and am going to try to run my self defense rounds through it along with other ammo and will give a field report when I am done. Thanks again guys.

My mags. are pretty much the same way on my 9.

Bonephish, what do you mean by polishing cylinder ?

Do you mean the barrel chamber ?

Thanks, 3

I had issues not with a sheild but a VTAC edition M&P. Took two boxes of ammo to sort out. After that it was smooth sailing. I put it to the slide spring being stiff and the slide not that smooth. Took some use to smooth out and runs like a Champ now.

So I shot some 165 grain TNJ Herters and all 50 rounds went through flawlessly. No issues. I shot 15 rounds of my self defense Hornady and no issues at all. Don't know what the deal was but seems like everything is okay as of now. My confidence is definitely increasing.
