M&P shield production halted?

S&W sells to Jobbers. The jobbers sell to dealers. Jobbers have a pecking order among the dealers they sell to. The best payers or bribers or drinking buddies get the guns first. It is best to get your name on several LGS lists. Guess what the dealers sell to their best buddies first too. Just the way it works.

lol isnt that how pretty much the whole world works!?

WOW ! That was hilarious. I love this place. Like home, a reunion, the local waterin' hole and work all in one.

I was able to purchase the Shield 9mm at Carter Country on I-10 in Houston. They had more. I fired 200 rounds today at the range and the gun operation was flawless accurate, no FTF, FTE, etc). I have never been so impressed with a firearm. KUDOs to S&W

I got mine a week ago at Carter's Country on 59 and took it to the range that afternoon.

I had a local gun store owner told almost the same story when I purchased my S&W M&P Shield 40. He said that Smith and Wesson is about to shut down production of the Shield line because of some "legal stuff". I was informed by him that the Shield 40 wont be coming out maybe until early 2013 or even spring of 2013 because of his story. But when he kept pushing me to buy the "last" Shield 9mm he got I started adding things up and I knew the guy was giving me bull spit info to hook me on what he was selling me. A week later the 40's came out and bought one on his competitor for a lower price than he is selling his 9 Shield at his store. I made sure to drop by his store that day i got my Shield and showed it to him in front of his customer and told him where I bought it and how much.

Although the Shields sell fast, he wanted you to buy what he had in the store right then and there instead of waiting for the .40. Some gun shops are no better than a car dealership when it comes to sales. If they can close the store with a tidy profit that day, they'll steer customers to whatever they have in the case/on the lot and make up any stories to get there.

I think it was Light Days Panty Shields that filed the lawsuit. S&W has agreed to change the name of their pistol to 9MM Crotch Protector With Stayput Wings.

Nonsense. They're changing the name to the M&P Assaver, available in 9x19 MetisMatch and .40 SavedisWeiner.

ECS

Knowing Carter's Country like I do, I bet it wasn't cheep.
I paid list, no big deal. I make a decent living and I wanted the pistol.

At least I have one to shoot and carry when I wear shorts. I didn't pay scalper's prices, so its all good from where I sit.

Shield availability

Two days ago I went to my local Gander Mountain and looked through their extremely large selection of handguns. There were no Shields. The salesman asked if he could help. I said I'd like to see a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm. He immediately replied, "We don't have any." He also told me Gander Mountain has stopped taking orders once they hit a six month backlog on current orders. He had no idea what was causing the delay. At least he was honest.

We left and went home. I called Cabelas 1-800 number and asked if they had any Shields. The guy I spoke with immediately knew the handgun and replied, "We stopped selling the gun because we have no idea when we'll get more." He indicated Cabelas couldn't get an estimate from Smith & Wesson when a new batch would be produced. Seems like an understandable answer; Why would you waste advertising/store space/time trying to sell something if you can't obtain the item.

I started looking on the internet and couldn't find anyone posting a recent purchase of a Shield in the last three months. I used to work in production and you don't wait three months for supply to reach a factory.

If Smith & Wesson added a third shift to meet demand then two large stores I spoke with that sell large amounts of handguns wouldn't be on the bottom of the list from distribution. Even common sense says you go with a retailer than can, has, and will sell your product. So I'm not buying the "We're working around the clock argument to meet demand."

If you don't agree with that then how is it that other industries can pump out a product until it overflows the shelves? I'm starting to accept that to a degree Smith and Wesson is having a public relations/marketing issue.

You can go to Best Buy and even the non commissioned sales people can tell you if a product is being phased out or being placed on hold due to a product issue.

Maybe based on what others are posting some accurate information can be compiled to give people an idea of when or if they'll be able to find one of these guns.

I think S&W knew the Shield was going sell well, that's why they had a bunch ready to go from the start. However I think they under estimated the public response/demand quite a bit. In playing catch up a few probs may have popped up along the way. My biggest concern for the owners of the "rushed production" Shield's would be QC. Better to slow down, provide appropriate press release's stating due to high demand customers may experience a delay in finding a Shield etc...
But we at S&W will always put quality above rushing production of a product for the benefit of our loyal customers... so on and so forth. That's how I would play it if there was/is a problem.
Just my .02

I go by S&W 2 times a week and live 10 miles from there, about every 5th person around here works there and the parking lot is full day and night, they cause traffic jams localy on shift changes.

Sounds like their at full swing then.

Wish you guys would quit telling me about getting one of these for under $400. :( I got a Shield 9 last week but they were a little hard to find and I had to cough up list ($449) for it. Really nice little pistol. I installed the Apex Duty/Carry kit in it yesterday (easier to do than I expected, thanks to the excellent how-to video from Apex). Haven't shot it yet but the trigger feels even better now with the kit in it, especially the short reset. Also added a Crimson Trace LG-489 on it to help out my ancient eyes. I'll take it to the range in the next couple of days.

Nice to see an American manufacturer doing so well. We all hear about the issues with S&W here, in our limited little world, but it appears they're doing quite nicely.
