I'm new to S&W but have been doing a lot of reading on the M&P15-22 and I'm ready to get one. The only one I can find in stock in my area is the following and it's about a 90 min. drive each way (but I could get it today :) ).

The associate at Gander Mountain could tell me only that it was the "tack driver" model and includes optics. Nothing else. I can find no info on SW's site either.

Is this an official Smith & Wesson package, or something Gander Mountain cobbled together? Either way, is anyone familiar with this model or can speak to the quality of "Tac Driver" optics?

I did find a reference in their online flyer with precious little info:
Smith & Wesson MP15-22 Ri? e with Tac Driver Scope 22
15.5” carbon steel threaded barrel with A1 style compensator
• 6 position CAR stock
• 25-round magazine
• 1.5-5x32 variable scope; red or green illuminated retical

So, I searched some variations on the spelling and I'm pretty sure the scope is a Kruger TacDriver which appears to be a budget scope brand although I cannot find a model similar to what is on the rifle in the photo.

K4 Riflescopes from Kruger Optical

Seems like a decent deal although I'm not in love with the looks of that scope.

Appears to be something Gander Mtn put together. Looks like the regular 811033 model with an added scope (the Kruger Tac-Driver).

I'm guessing 15.5" is the barrel alone. Add the "compensator" and it's 16".

Doesn't seem like a deal. The two items separately are the same price. Edit: Actually it would be less. The scope is only $95 at OpticsPlanet.

If that were true then it would have to be permanently attached. I'm guessing someone typed in the sight radius from S&W details.

Yes, it isn't a bargain. I'd be paying a little extra to have it today rather than having a mail order gun shipped to my FFL (who is out of town at a show). Paying a $50 transfer fee to my FFL erases a lot of the mail order savings.

EDIT: Oh well it's no longer an issue. GM doesn't actually have it in stock anyway. Glad I called back to double check before driving out there.

Thanks for the info and guidance.

Not that bad of a deal.... The cheapest I can find the rifle is $399, then add a $100 scope and you are at $500.

So $550 isn't far off!!!

Does anybody recognize what scope is on the M&P15-22 in the photo below?

It looks really cool. I'm hoping it isn't the one mentioned in the article. Cool thought it may be, I don't see myself putting $1700 worth of glass on a $400 rifle.

EDIT: note this photo is not the gander mtn package. I've moved on to planning my mail order purchase.

Took me a minute to figure out your post in relation to the ad, but I see it now. I kept thinking "What the hell is a S&W Tac Driver model?" LoL :) The rifle model is not "Tac Driver", the scope is. Its:

"Smith & Wesson MP15-22 Rifle with Tac Driver Scope 22"

Yeah its a Kruger scope. I think this is it > http://www.opticsplanet.net/kruger-optical-1-5-5x32-tacdriver-illuminated-mil-dot-30mm-tactical-riflescope-matte.html Must be secret as there is no pic, maybe they are ashamed of it or something? :) Kruger doesn't even have that scope on their web site, at least I can't find it in their "TacDriver" series, maybe its too new and the web site has not been updated or has been discontinued.

Kruger did something interesting with a red dot type sight though > http://www.krugeroptical.com/ko-tactical-scopes-next.asp

Yes, it was confusing because I was confused. ;)

I called around to all the big SW dealers within about 100 miles and found only one M&P15-22 in stock. The Gander Mountain associate couldn't tell me the model number but insisted the gun was the Smith & Wesson "Tackdriver" model which is the "rimfire AR-15 that comes with optics". I found the ad while googling trying to figure out what exactly they had in stock.

They apparently sold the gun while I was trying to figure out what they had and if I wanted to drive out there for it. The guys at the firearms dept at Gander were quite unhelpful and didn't seem very knowlegable. I'm kind of glad I won't be buying from them.

I saw the ad last Sunday and I think you would be better served buying the 15-22 for around 400 and picking up a NcStar tactical III between 80 and 100

Well, since S&W doesn't have a TacDriver model, it might be a safe bet to assume they either didn't know what they were talking about or are really confused.

LOL, the guy on the phone acted like I was really dumb for not knowing what the "Tack driver" was.

"It's the Smith and Wesson Tackdriver. I don't know what the model number is. It's the Tackdriver model."

Maybe he was really busy and wanted to get me off the phone ASAP. Either way, no great loss not doing business with them.

I just got back from my local Gander and they have one 'TackDriver' LOL left. I looked at the scope and it is cool, but not $150 cool. It is heavy as a tank too. I think the scope weighs a couple pounds... Feels like it anyway.

I'm keeping my order for my 15-22 for $399 and would like to put a red dot holographic on it.....

While there I see they have a really nice used 4566TSW, but they want $800!!!! My local Gander is way overpriced on everything they have.

The regular 15-22 at GMs run $499. So with their sale price on the Tack Driver, you are paying $50 for the scope. The local GM by me had this model in and I looked at the scope. They don't sell a comperable scope individually.

That price is way too high. Even if the scope is $50 extra for the "tac driver" model, you are paying a $100 premium on the base rifle. Typical of Gander.

Buy the gun somewhere else and pick the scope you want for it separately.

Easiest thing to do with Gander is have them price match guns if they have the gun in stock you really want. They will price match any competitor within about an hour drive. Got my 15-22 knocked down from $500 to $414 just this past week. They weren't too happy but I was. So it's definitely a better route to just pick up the rifle and add your own scope.
