get the piston driven gun! ALOT less cleaning than the gas system(stoner direct inpengment(sp) ). More money initially but well worth the extra price in ease of maintenance! Also, be wary of "cheap" or "special" AR15's. Have heard alot of those are made with "plastic" parts and do not hold up well. Cheapest AR I have seen is the RRA Sportical at $650. Just make sure you are getting all the gun for the money!
From my research, I found that while gas piston AR is easier to clean, there is a drawback. The drawback is that the gas piston systems are not standardized. Different manufacturers have different implementations of the gas driven system. The drawback being the use of proprietary parts which drives up parts cost and potentially causing parts availability issues.
If I were to buy a gas piston driven AR, I'd make sure to buy one from a reputable manufacturer that has been in business for a long, long time.
Direct impingement systems are (for the most part) built to a standardized specification. Standardized parts leads to more competition amongst different parts manufacturers, driving down the end-cost to the consumer, and greater parts availability.
If cleaning is the main concern, I've found tools that aid in the cleaning of the bolt tail, bolt carrier, and another tool that aids in cleaning the barrel locking lugs.
An example of a bolt / bolt carrier tool is the CAT M4:
Combat Application Tools, Inc
I have no experience using any of these tools. Before buying any cleaning tool, I'll first give the good old-fashioned cleaning methods a try.
Regarding the cheap plastic parts; I've done limited research but I've only found one instance of an inexpensive, complete AR lower made from reinforced polymer. It's made by PCF Manufacturing, formerly Plum Crazy Firearms. It uses a proprietary trigger group. I haven't seen one in person to have any first hand opinions on it.
Again, I highly advise the young OP to do the research into the different systems. That way he has a better chance at discerning fact from opinion, and make his own choice.
Now this prematurely old-coot is signing off.
