ya might wanna put a light coat of oil on it.... I noticed a touch of rust on mine last summer, I oiled it up good, rubbed it down with some kroil and it's been fine since.

Summer heat, damp sweat, and a constricting carry holster are worst-case conditions for a gun. Smith may repair the finish for you under warranty, but the rust was likely caused by improper maintenance. At the end of each day, remove your gun from its holster, wipe it down, and let it sit outside the holster when not carried. In the morning, check your carry condition and reassemble your rig as you intend to carry it. It only adds a couple minutes to your day and can help prevent future rusting.

There are some high-tech coatings that are more resilient, but daily maintenance is your cheapest and easiest solution. Welcome to the forum and I hope you get your 40c straightened out.

thanks alot for the quick respones & the welcome as well.i've been wiping it down with rem oil in the spray can.hope this helps.

I've had bad experiences using rem oil. I'm in south Louisiana and we do lots of duck and goose hunting in rain and extremely high humidity and when using rem oil I was getting surface rust on the blued finish on my shotguns. Since then I switched to Break Free CLP or No3 house oil on all of my guns and I no longer have any problems with rust. Try a different protectant see if that helps, if not I would contact S&W and send it back. Good luck with it.

Just backing up Kcabear, Remoil has let me down too. The worst let down involves tacking up in long-term storage. I really like Weaponshield, but there are many that work. Daily maintenance should really do it though, even with Remoil.

sent it to s&w & they replaced slide & barrel free of charge!:)can't get any better than that.also replaced rem oil with lubriplate white lubricate & fmo oil.the oil coats the slide leaving a dry film after wiping.sweat just beads up like rain on a freshly waxed hood.thanks again for all the replies .

Another vote for Weapon Shield. In all my years of professional gun use I have not found a better product for total gun care. Bill

There was a recent corrosion test I saw that included Weapon Shield and it prevented rust nearly as well as grease but out performed every oil tested. It is the one I use now and it is great. Also, based on the MSDS, it is also much safer than most oils as well.
