Hello, I just bought a new M19-9 classic series revolver. The bluing on the barrel looks different from the bluing on the frame. The bluing on the barrel looks a little cloudy and in certain light a little splotchy—kind of. The frames looks blacker and deeper than the barrel. Does anyone have a similar issue? Is it because the barrel is a sleeve and perhaps a different material than the rest of the revolver? Is this normal on a m19-9? One other thing, the frame looks super smooth, but the barrel has many tiny lines throughout—again, you have to rotate it under the light to see it but you can. You cannot feel the lines, just see under the shine—kind of like swirl after waxing a black car. Any help or information I would appreciate it. Thank you!!!

Welcome to the S&W Forums!

I have handled only one 19-9, but the one I handled had a very even finish on the cylinder, frame, and shroud. Could you post some pics? If you are not satisfied with the finish and since it is brand new, you should contact S&W.

Agree. Contact S&W if there is a problem with the finish.

Here's mine that I bought a year or two ago.

I admit there is some bad lighting in these pictures, but the gun looks great.

I picked up and cleaned it up with renaissance wax. After that. I polished with a silicone cloth which makes it look great, but when the silicon rubs off I see the difference in bluing between the frame/cylinder and the barrel shroud.

Cajunbass. Thanks for the pics. Since you have a 19-9, do you see a different between the frame/ cylinder and the barrel?

Cajunbass, thanks! Do you notice a difference any difference between the frame/ cylinder and the barrel?

My 19-9 has a blotchy blue finish on the barrel as you describe. Probably the worst finish job I have seen come from the S&W factory. My 19-9 is a shooter and I really don't personally care that much. I draw from the holster and shoot steel on my country property and it has finish wear on the muzzle and frame after doing this for a few years. If this gun was a collectible or something I probably would have sent it back, but for me it's not. It functions perfectly and with this particular firearm that's all I personally care about. I can totally understand somebody wanting to send it back to S&W to make it right. I probably should have just to make a point.

I have seen old blued s&w revolvers that absolutely have cylinders and barrels that don't really match the frames. The barrel and cylinder are almost a purplish black on my old model 29, for instance.

Last night I pulled the 29-10 I bought last year out of the safe. The bluing on it too is inconsistent, but honestly I never noticed and I had to look very closely to even see it. It's a non-issue really. It's a shooter. That's all I care about.

I just bought a new 586 and the blue finish is consistent over the entire gun. I just wipe it off with a rag that has a little Hoppes gun oil that I keep at my safe. I don't use wax on any of my firearms although that would not hurt them. I have always just preferred to use the rag with a tiny bit of oil.
