I have a NON-pinned 25-5 that needs a doctor...

? #1: Pulled the trigger and it failed to reset. It likes to hug the rear of the trigger guard. Spring maybe?

? #2: Removing the side plate in general. Best left to a gunsmith?

? #3: I really want to change the front sight, to a more combat one. Something like a "big dot." Possible with the non-pinned barrel?

Any thoughts/advice thanked in advance. THANK YOU!

Could possibly be a broken rebound Spring or a broken Stud. Without seeing it apart it's hard to say for sure. If you don't want to get into "smithing", find a competent Gun Smith. If you can handle taking off the Side-plate and are mechanically inclined with a knowledge of Smith Revolvers - a look inside would probably tell you in a minute what the issue is.

If the sight is integral with the barrel, changing it requires gun smithing. If it is pinned in then you might be able to replace it with after market parts. Changing the front sight sometimes requires changing the rear as well so they index to one another for proper impact. While rear adjustable sights are just that - they have a limit as to how far the adjustment goes.

it sounds like the rebound spring. it is very easy to replace. the front sight is another story. unless you just have to have another I would leave it alone,,,,,,,,,,,,

Welcome to the forum.

1. If you nudge the trigger will it spring forward by itself? Might need a good cleaning. Has the spring ever been changed to a lighter spring?

2. Removing side plate: YouTube

3. Drill a small dimple in front sight blade at the top of the ramp and fill with white epoxy.
Or determine if the front sight blade is pinned into the base, then go shopping on google. Most anything you find will require some skill for installation, however.

Removal of the side plate is no big thing as long as you have some modest level of mechanical ability and a good set of parallel ground screwdrivers. As noted above there are several good videos on youtube that show you how to do it. Quite possibly just a broken or weak rebound spring combined with crud inside. That is an easy fix.

The link I posted above by a S&W trained smith is the best video I've found. Most are mediocre and even have bad information.

Parallel ground screwdrivers are called "Hollow Ground", but many are ground too short. The tip must contact the bottom of the screw slot before the sides of the tip contact the 'lips' of the screw slot. Or else the slot 'lips' will be 'upset' and form 'knife' edges that stick up or even burr (bugger) the lips.

ARE 25-5s under S&W warranty? If it is they should send a shipping label. You could ask S&W to quote you a price to replace the front sight at the same time they repair the trigger problem.

It could just be an accumulation of gunk in the action, a good internal cleaning may fix. Try several shots of gun scrubber or brake and parts cleaner into the action (remove grips first). If that works, it needs to have the side plate removed and the cleaning finished.

I "blasted" the trigger area with BLASTER!

It worked!!! Displaced tiny bits of popcorn, pizza crumbs, and the kitchen sink. :o

As for the barrel sights; that seems like a prob...

I'm thinking of putting glow-paint on the front S&W orange insert, and maybe a larger, black "combat" style on the rear...

Any thoughts on that? And... Thanks again!
