Hi I'm new here.. I have owned a model 37 j frame since the 80s it's got the aluminum frame. I have never shot it that much it was supposed to be just for backup anyway it makes a rattling sound when I shake it . I think it's the hammer bar . But not certain. It seems to operate correctly but haven't fired it for twenty years. Now I'm going for my ccw and might want it

Welcome to the forum.....

Your assessment of the source of the "rattle" as you called it is probably correct. Perfectly normal. Correct terminology for the part would be hammer block.

S&W revolvers do not have a "hammer bar" or transfer bar.

When ever you hear a rattle in a Smith Revolver it means it is a broken piece of junk. I will furnish my address so you can immediately get rid of all those "DEFECTIVE" Revolvers! Always glad to help out a new member.

Just joking of course - normal hammer block safety rattling noise that is in all Smith Revolvers. :D

Welcome to the Forum and to Smiths!

A rattling hammer block safety is one indication that the guns lubricant has dried out and it needs servicing.
