Just got a set of used Herrett 1911 grips to replace the large factory grips but now my mag release is way too proud. Does anyone make a shorter mag release or do I need to get a spare to somehow shorten?

Herrett and Clark think they are..I think that I will like them better for my 2 gun matches than the nice target s&w grips. But that doesn't answer my question about the mag release.

Heres a photo. The button is a hair over 5/16 inch proud of the frame. If I lay it down on the button side the mag will pop out.

As the owner of a Model 41 and numerous 1911s, I have to agree with those who have said the grips are not a good fit for the gun.

A very nice fellow named MauleN12VR saw my post here and kindly offered some magazine release parts for me to mess with. I want to publicly thank you sir. I shortened the bottom of the button and the threaded end of the release to where its a little lower than the checkered 1911 style grips but I can still reach it with my thumb. Filed the shallow slot into the bottom for the plunger. Cleaned up my cuts with some 320 grit paper and oxpho blued the bare steel. Here it is next to my original. First Sunday of next month I'll give it a run.

I've since modded a mag follower for 12 rds and added a 1911 mag bumper to make reloading a little slicker. I want to do one more with the bumper and two more 12 rounders. I also messed with the safety by tweeking the spring so now its not impossible to use. Finally I removed the coiled spring around the magazine safety [dumb] which deactivated it. Shot about 70 rds through it last weekend at my 2gun with no issues other than needing an eleventh round to complete a clean stage but having to mess with a reload. This is what spurred me to see if I could increase the round count per mag. Didn't know about the red follower 12 rd mags. I've looked for them and only found one for 70 bucks. I'll make my own.

Nice work. Not being a collector, I believe in making a gun your own.

Those 1911 style trainer grips are very comfortable for me. I don't give a rats arse about what others think. I carry a 41 in a holster. When I get a deal on a set I will get a release and shorten it , maybe even solder a dime on it. Armchair crowd will stroke out and roll out of their Lazy Boys.
I can't imagine a better rig than a first generation 5"field barrel with plain Patridge sight blade and the Herrett 1911 style grips. I wish I had done stuff like this years ago instead of holding things up like they were priceless art.

Nice Job on that. I like the 45 type grips for when you want minimal bulk.

I went the opposite way on my Mod 41 putting some Nill grips on her. With them the long factory button is perfect; not easily pushed inadvertently but still able to drop the mag with no problems.
