Hello,

I am new to the group and have a 340sc that I am thinking about getting Mag-na-ported, and am looking for input before doing so.

I am in the process of having the factory complete an action job and install an XS Tritium front sight, and have already installed a set of CT LG-405 grips.

I plan on using this as my everyday carry piece using Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel - 135 Gr ammo in 38+P or 357.

I want to make sure that I weigh all of the pros and cons before making my decision and welcome any ideas.

Thanks,
Steve

Personally I don't think Mag-na-porting is a great idea for a 340. With full loads the revolver is blasty enough. If you want to tame the recoil of the little beast just use milder loads.

The XS Tritium front sight is probably a good idea. I have a 340 SC myself. The only mods so far have been to paint the front sight bright red and take out the internal lock mechanism.

Taking out the I.L. saves some utterly useless weight

When I had the sideplate off to remove the IL I made sure to lubricate the mechanism with a few little drops of Shooters Choice FP-10 Gun Lubricant. The quality gun oil did wonders for the feel of the trigger pull. It is much smoother now.

Good luck with your 340sc. You have great taste in handguns!

Steve, NO, save your money, you will have enough of a "ball of fire" out in front of the gun as it is......
besides, ,.just possibly ( depending on just where the 'ports' end up), you may 'negate' your "new, special " front sight ,with powder fouling....
just MY .02 cents

Magnaporting has some potential benefits and imposes some costs. It is at its best with high pressure cartridges and longer barrels (for example, a 7 1/2" .454 Casull). You are not likely to see any noticeable benefit in a 340, and you're going to get blast and flash redirected up into your own sensory envelope. IMHO, a bad idea for this gun.

I agree....I have a 340 as well. I just carry +P rounds in it. Its loud enough as it is and doubt it would help muzzle rise to port the beast.

two piece barrel?

I thought that the 340/360 series all had 2 piece barrels? maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't the burning gases destroy the outer barrel shroud? .....maybe I need to go look at my barrel again...brb...

yup, looks stainless on the inside, aluminum on the outside, but does not have the cut-out for the special barrel wrench like some of the other 2 piece barrels...what's up with that?

I have a 340 and while the recoil is stout I'd never have it ported. I've had guns ported before and wish I hadn't. The biggest benefit I noticed with my guns was the transfer of my $$$ to them.

Plan on loving it and keeping it if you do, since you'll never get near your money back out of it.

Personally wouldn't do it and personally don't find it adds much in the way of what it purports to accomplish. YMMV . . .

I have shot several Magna Ported rifles.

I have a Blaser R 93 and have shot 300 Win Mag, and 375 H&H Magna Ported barrels side by side with non magna Ported barrels.

I fine the MP takes the hard slap out of the recoil and lessens the muzzle jump a bunch. I do not fine it any louder in the field than non MP barrels. I also find that I can shoot better groups with ti at longer ranges, mainly because it lessens muzzle jump...

I like it on rifles.

However once upon a time I shot several different S&W Mod 29's side by side.

The one with MP did have a little less muzzle jump, it had wood grips...
The "softest" shooting Mod 29 had rubber grips....

I will say that a Comp, such as a Wilson, on a 1911 reduces recoil a BUNCH.

You would most likely experience less muzzle rise and magna-porting is not as dramatic in blast as is a full porting job. That said, I agree with the others and would stick to 38+P loads vs going to a full .357 and porting. Not to mention trying to eject .357 casings from most J frame snubbies can be tedious at the range and life threatening in a shooting.

Steve....I agree with all the above; save your money. What I did to tame the recoil on my 340SC was get a good set of grips that fit (Spegels) and use +P ammo. I find magnum loads downright brutal.

Just to muddy the water I will throw in my two cents. After carrying a 4" model 14 as a duty weapon for 18 years I believed it to be under powered. When permitted to replace it with a 9mm I did so. I believe it is only marginally better and would have preferred a .45ACP but I find the S&W revolvers to be more consistently reliable. Like a hammer, if you can find it, it will work. I believe the second best to be a .357 mag. although over penetration can be a problem with full house loads in an urban setting.

I reasoned that the Model 60-15 3" would be the hot ticket with Speer short barrel loads and added one to my other 5 .357's. I have large hands and the rosewood stocks beat up my hand. I went to Hogue rubber stocks which helped some but the trigger guard still beat up the first knuckle on my forefinger. I sent it to S&W for porting and they sent it to Magna-port for their Quadra porting (4 ports). This relieved the finger damage but the gun still rotated in my hand more than I liked.

While engaged in solving the world's problems at a local gun shop, I spotted a set of Pachmeier stocks for the model 60 that were long enough for me to get my whole hand, with all four fingers, on the stocks. This combination has proved to be the hot ticket for this kid.

The Speer short barrel 135gr GDHP is advertised to produce 990fps at the muzzle when fired from a 2" vented barrel producing 294 lbs/ft of energy. Fired from my gun that ammo measured 1074fps at 3 yards from the muzzle which I compute to be 345 lbs/ft, very near the realm of the 45ACP. (Before I take a drubbing for putting stock in muzzle energy, I realize, in this instance, it is only for a rough comparison).

As for muzzle flash I have never found it to be a problem. When firing night qualification on the combat range at the LAPD academy, in that canyon on a moonless night, the range master turned the targets away and then turned down the lights. With my night vision gone I could hear the targets turn to face me but could not see the targets. I fixated on the position of the first target before the lights were turned down and prayed for muzzle flash to use as a strobe light to determine where my sights were aligned when each shot was fired. After the first shot it was easy to make minor corrections and go for the gold.

I also have a 629 3" commemorative of 150 years of S&W, which was ported by S&W. I love it and shoot full house .44 Mag's regularly and have never had a problem with muzzle flash. Basically, to each, his or her own so peek and pry, money permitting, of course.

Hi Steve,

I have a MagnaPorted 3" m65. A great gun made worse IMO by the porting. The muzzle flip is improved using full-house loads, but is minimally affected by lesser loads. However, the amount of muzzle flash and greatly increased noise really diminishes the utility of the firearm for anything but outdoor/daylight use. It doesn't help to have faster recovery time between shots if you can't see your target.

Best Regards,
Roger

I have fired a 340 that was mag-na-ported with a trigger job by the same company and have to say my 340sc could use a trigger job but I wouldn't spend the money on the porting.

If you really do not like the extra recoil, just sell the higher priced 340 and get a 642 to run 38+p through.

New here guys but I have a question. I have a S&W M&P 340 .357 and my question is can I get that short little barrel ported to cut down on the kick, plus it looks cool. Number 1.) is it possible 2.) who could do something like that! Thanks in advance guys! Joe

Being a dedicated Self defense gun, it would , in my opinion, be a mistake to port a gun for that role. Many classes teach a hold that keeps the gun close to you, and the barrel/ cylinder gap spits enough flame. A port job would only make it worse, and may injure the shooter.

Member "Pred" in the thread linked below indicated he has one Magnaported. It would be nice if he could produce some sort of review for all of us. Maybe you could PM him. I've thought about it and will consider it after I shoot some full power Federal 125 and 158 gr 357 rounds through it for chrono results and recoil impression.

Groo here
I have an Sp101 with 4 ports,2 FA83 454's [4 3/4 and 7 1/2 in]
A trailboss 3in 44mag, and some TC contenders [ one a 45-70]
In all cases the porting does not change the recoil of the gun.
It DOES change the ROTATION of the gun, the barrel does not come
up as fast or far.
As to "Flash " given the amount that comes out of the BC gap
any out the ports is of little import.
