Just curious what this group thinks about magna-porting? I recently picked up a 60-10 that has been magna-ported. I have never owned one before and really do not know much about the pros and cons.

Well here are some disadvantages:

1. It will be louder
2. It will dirty up the barrel around the ports
3. While shooting in the dark it can affect your night vision
4. If you have night sights on the gun it can darken and dirty up your
sights over time
5. Usually not a modification most people desire and will normally
make the gun worth less money
6. The ports can sometimes be hard to clean thoroughly
7. If having this modification performed on a gun it usually costs a
pretty penny

advantages:

1. Helps with recoil and can make your follow up shots better due to getting back on target quicker

I have never cared for it. I would not buy a gun with it. I t is supposed to reduce muzzle flip on larger caliber guns. i don't know that you need it on a 38. "An ingenious solution to a non-existent problem"

I had a 4 inch 66 that was Magna Ported. It did really help on the recoil with full house 357 mag rounds. Shot those and felt recoil was more like 38 spl. target loads. But.... my gun had the red ramp front sight. Soot would blacken the red ramp and the muzzle blast coming up from the ports kinda melted the edges of the red insert. Never enough to cause it to come loose though. And as mentioned before, if shot in the dark, the flash will blind you temporarily.

At one time it was the rage among some.I had a 4 inch 29 that was magna ported, really did not cut recoil as much as I expected and muzzle blast was excessive. Many people seem to want to pay less for a ported gun and it really lowers the price on a collectalle IMO.

I have a 3" mod 629-1 that is magnaported. I have shot one that has been untouched and I cannot tell the difference. Both have a vicious bark and muzzle flip. I wouldn't pay for the porting myself. Just my opinion.

I have a 340 and 386 that I had ported and a 586 that came ported. My experience:
When shooting 125 gr 357's the porting greatly reduces muzzle rise. With 38's including +P there is not much difference in muzzle rise over non ported guns. Ported guns are louder. Shooting in the dark is pretty much a non issue if you have a good flashlight. Without a good light shooting at night is like looking at a flash bulb. I have trijicon front sights with a white ring and I haven't had any trouble keeping them clean. I just use a cue tip with solvent on them. As far as a ported gun's resale value goes, I certainly wouldn't spend the money on getting the porting done if I weren't going to keep it. I carry 357's and for me I like that porting allows for fast follow up shots especially with the 340.

I really appreciate the comments so far. I took my magna-ported Model 60 to the range today for the first time. I agree with most of what has been said. With 38s I did not notice much at all. When I switched to 357s I noticed a lot of stuff flying back in my face. It was not much, but more than any other gun I have fired. I bought this revolver already magna-ported. I don't think I would pay to have it done.
