Mags for guns I dont own...yet

Haha, this is a neat tale either way, but NOW that you own a Star 30MI, do you now also realize what a pain in the butt it is to find a magazine for it, and an affordable one at that?

This makes your tale even better! :D
Yeah, having a spare magazine definitely came into play with my decision to get the 30MI.

My personal favorite pistol has long been the CZ 75, and after reading of a similar design on Stephen Camp's website, I was interested (he did a writeup on the Model 28). When I got a surplus B Super, I was very impressed with it overall, and that sold me on the brand.

After figuring out that I had a magazine for it (like you said, they are scarce and pricey), I bumped the pistol up to the top of the list for next purchase at the time.
I know there is another guy who posts here that is a big fan of the double stack DA Star like the Model 28/30/31 and he says the 5906 magazine works but I believe that is only if the pistol is altered and the magazine safety is removed. I have not removed mine (yet?) but the pistol is pretty cool and I like it.
I love mine too, it's a great example of just a big, well-crafted pistol.

I've heard the 59xx magazine compatability tale too, but haven't acted on it.

Well, those magazines I bought for guns I didn't own are now spare mags for the 3913, 3914, and 4013!

Not sure if it was the fact I had the mags already, but it became harder and harder to wait for the "right" ones to come along. Time to look for some cs40 mags now!

I wonder if any of the S&W single stack mags would work with the Star Firestar pistols?
39 series in M43. Firestar 9mm?
4013? series in M40 Firestar .40?
4513 series in M45 Firestar?

The CS45/Star model 45 is a direct exchange
except you have to mill the mag catch holes for the other.
All 45xx single stacks work, via the mag catch holes as well,
so you can also use the big stick mags as well.

Didn't get the chance to check the M43/39xx flip,
as I recently sold my M43 before getting a 39xx/CS9.
Special Note, the M43 & M40 mags DO interchange,
and will hold & fire perfectly either 9mm or .40,
which I believe is the ONLY time this has ever been done correctly.
Bloody amazing more MFR's didn't catch on to that trick,
using mags that accept either 9mm or .40-S&W
is a stroke of genius!!!

And I did test that extensively, so I know it to be true.
And there's still buttloads of NOS 43/40 mags available...
as they're still in production by the original MFR, MecGar,
and tons of the 9mm & 40 mags on just about every auction site
and FleaBay...most at very reasonable prices. Shop Smart.

The M43 went to fund a M243, which, IIRC, switches with 69xx mags...
again by adding a mag catch hole.

The CS40 uses mags made specifically for it,
as it shares the CS45 frame. So no love there.

The M28/M30 uses S&W 5906/59xx mags
and the M31 (.40S&W) uses 40xx mags...
but as with the 45's, you must add a mag catch hole,
AND...either add a shelf for the mag safety to engage,
or disable the mag safety, which is detailed on another site.

Hope that helps ;) I'm a storehouse of useless Star Pistol Info,
and will be learning more as I collect more Stars :D
Have owned the M30P & M43;
Currently own:
M45 in .45acp
M205 in 9mm
M205 in .40-S&W
M243 in 9mm

Need: Megastar in .45acp & 10mm
M243 in .40-S&W or conversion for my 9mm
M40 in .40-S&W
and if I can ever find them,
the M105 (rare)
and M316 (rare) / ASTAR MAX 8800 (moderate production run).

I just found a secret stash of S&W 3rd gen mags for a 4006, 4043, 4046, 4026, 4003, 411, and 410. I own neither of these guns at the present time, but must have sold off at least 2-3 reluctantly over the past few years.

Well, needless to say, I have to be on the hunt again, as I think I bought enough magazines to last me three lifetimes.....

Not competing intentionally, just feeding the addiction. As far as how many are in that box, look closer, there are two layers.

At the Akron show today,I 'scored' 2 mags, a 69 series 10 rounder(1st one I've ever seen) for $30 and a CS40(still in original package) for $20.

I have 10 factory 8 rd mags for S&W single stack 39-2;half have metal followers while the rest have black plastic.

When it comes to the double stack 59 series I have about 6 different variations of factory mags in 14rd and 15rd capacities.Only one in my collection has a both a metal follower and metal base marked as 9mm and S&W on the base.

The newest is a 15rd mag in SS with an orange follower,S&W logo on the side and Smith and Wesson in a cutout on the plastic base.

I wonder how many variations of the S&W 14/15 rd mags there actually are for the 59 series?

Idk how many variations there are, but I need to find some! I just scored a 469 yesterday and only got one mag.

What about 10mm??? ;) :D

Methinks you are selling off too many of your 3rd Gen magazine finds from the shows. ;) I figure you should have at least double that list in stock right now with the effort you put in! :D

10mms' aren't listed because my stock is 'keeper' stock until I get more.
Most of the list is stock to sell. I probably would have had double that had I not sold any,but if I wasn't selling,I wouldn't be accumulating. I'd only have those for MY pistols. When I see a 'want to buy' here and on the other forums,I respond thru a PM. Most of the 'common ones' are available thru Midway,Brownells,CTD,and others.
The 'stock' is constantly changing due to shipping out or show acquisitions.

I bought four Mec-Gar branded 59 series magazines (I own a 5903) for $23 a piece, and six S&W branded 6906 magazines (made by Mec-Gar for S&W) for $22 a piece. I have been yearning for a 6906 since early this year, and always liked the way it fit my hand and the smooth DA/SA trigger. I also scored three brand new factory Browning Hi-Power magazines in the box cheap (also made by Mec-Gar) that will be my birthday present next year. The 6906 will be my Christmas present

Hey BigShrek,
Do know of any non-star mags that can be modified/used in the PD? I bought a really nice one many months ago but it only had one mag.
thanks, fuzzy

Are any of those 5900-series 15-round magazines "pre-bans"? You can tell by no S&W logo present and only one mag release cut (not two)... and no LEO/export-only warning, of course. :D Also helps if they have the wide/shallow appearing lower indents apparently indicating earlier production.

Those remain the only 3rd Gen magazines that I am short on due to having bought too many 5900/900-series pistols with just one gosh-darned magazine. :(
