Manual for Highway Patrolman

I would like to locate or download a manual for my S&W 357 Highway Patrolman. I inherited it at my father's death. I think it is from around the mid '50s era. It does not have a model number stamped inside the cylinder/ejector cavity. I have the following info.

Hand ejector
S/N s 1296XX
357 Mag ctg Highway Patrolman
6" Barrel
Adjustable Sights

Your gun is a "Pre-Model" 28 and may have just come with a Helpful Hints Brochure.

The instruction manuals were introduced in 1957 to coincide with the Model numbering identification.

The Model 28 No Dash paperwork shown below (Dated 1-60) displays the gun wearing "Diamond Magnas" and a 4 screw gun parts breakdown.

The later Model 28 paperwork suggested above is very easy to find and purchase but will not be perfectly accurate to your 1950s Highway Patrolman.

Here is a generic manual from S&W's website. It will have general information about safety, etc., but it is not specific to your 1950s vintage Highway Patrolman. Still, if you want information on how to load it, unload it, clean it, handle it safely, etc., this should be helpful.

If you want more in-depth information such as disassembly / reassembly etc., Amazon has Jerry Kuhnhausen's book, but that may be overkill for your needs and it is a hardcopy of the book, not a pdf. Not to mention it costs about $44 new:

S 1296xx probably shipped in 1955 or 1956. N-frames from that era can't be dated very precisely by comparison with nearby SNs alone. But I do list S1291xx as shipping in 4/1955.

Thanks everyone for all of the great info and links. That posting by Engine49guy is amazing. The prices back in the day... My dad bought it for protection, as he carried large sums every Friday on the way to the bank.

This manual is of a 28-2 dated 1974. It will be very close and helpful in many ways but not 100% accurate.
