Massachusetts is trying to ban all private sales and transfers of firearms. All such transfers, sales, inheritances etc would have to go through an FFL.

One thing that hasn't been considered with this is that Massachusetts reguires registraton of all gun sales whether through a FFL or a private party.

Why is that bad? Well an FFL is not allowed to sell you a gun that is not on the States Acceptable Gun List, unless there is documentation that the gun was owned in Massachusetts prior to 1994!

So if you Grandfather brought home his Colt 1911 you cannot inheritate him from him if this new law passes

BECAUSE ALL COLTS and many other guns are Banned in Massachusetts!

Here in Mass we to get a gun license, you have to fill out forms, get a background check, fingerprints, 2 reference letters, a face to face meeting with the Police Chief in your town and he/she has sole disgression on whether you are physically or mentally competent to have a gun!

I LOVE MASSACHUSETTS ;)

Not quite.

First, the date is 1998; not 1994.

Second, the only guns "Banned in Massachusetts!" are post-ban "assault weapons" in pre-ban configuration; i.e., bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, etc.

Third, letters are not a statutory requirement for a firearms license application; nor is a meeting with the chief - although s/he may want to meet with you.

The "disgression" is wholly absent for an application for a Firearms Identification Card, which permits the holder to possess NON-"large capacity" long arms. It IS a matter of discretion whether a License To Carry is issued, meaning ANY handgun or "large capacity" long arm is at the whim of the chief.

All that said, Governor Patrick's bill is virulently anti-gun and would destroy the value of any collection containing guns not on the Approved Firearms Roster.

His lackeys in the Dept. of Public Safety are also working to develop regulations that would effectively end all training and competitions at clubs by imposing unworkable "safety" requirements, such as police details and cops as RO's.

Nothing will change. That state still worships the Kennedy's.

I fear so. As MA is having an election to fill that seat, whether it puts the Republican candidate in or yet another Demo who votes on feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelings will tell us all we need to know.

I have to disagee with Amici, although he is probably correct about the 1998 date, but has he tried to buy a Colt 1911 or a Colt SINGLE ACTION in Mass? You cannot do it unless it was here before 1998!
This is due to the fact that any gun manufacturer that wants to sell a gun here has to submit it for testing and pay a big fee, Colt among others has refused to do so. As are result I cannot buy a Colt 45 Single Action, new.
Springfield Armory 1911's etc are not legal to purchase in Mass.

I cannot buy empty shell casings and have them sent to Mass as they are "bullet making components" that are illegal to ship to Mass.

I used to have an FID card, now I have had a LTC (License to Carry) for 20 years and was an Auxilary Police Officer in Westwood MA.

It is true as Amici says, that the letters and the meeting are up to the Chief in each town, and it is the Chief who will decide is you get or lose a license no one else.

This state is so screwed up, I would move it I could!

Another proposal in the state house, I don't know if it is dead yet, is that if you have a machine gun Federal License you could buy and own a machine gun but it would be illegal to fire it.

Which does NOT mean the guns are, as you claim, "banned." They are PERFECTLY legal to own and PERFECTLY legal to sell privately. They cannot by sold by a DEALER to a MA resident because Colt has made ZERO effort to certify its products as MA compliant - even though most of the CA certification process is the same as MA and can be used to show compliance.

See above.

True. MA treats cases, bullets and primers as "ammunition" and requires a license to sell them in MA and a license to possess them.

Further evidence that one should not ask cops questions about firearms laws. Dispatchers are even worse.

WRONG. That is a proposed REGULATION, the hearing for which was held back in July. It WILL be back.

LOL :D

Amici, your are correct, it is thru FFL's that we have problems getting guns, such as Bass Pro.

I guess I get on a rant about Mass, gotta love kerry and patrick

Call it paranoia. I know how easy it is to google someone's address on line and find out where they live and I have posting pictures of a Victory Model I picked up.

Also I belong to the Single Action Shooting Society and my alias is Ben Cartwright from Bonanza - I certainly have the white hair! but I look more like Hoss!
