S&W 3rd gen question.

Other than the dust cover rail on the TSW, the different shape of the slide cut-out where the safety would go, and the laser etching "9 TACTICAL" ---> is there any mechanical difference between the regular 3953 & the 9 Tactical 3953TSW ??

I'm assuming most parts would inter-change, correct?

Thanks.

Small parts should interchange but if the compact TSW's follow the full size then slide and frames don't swap between them.

Which parts are you asking about or what plans have you got?

The TSW "9 Tactical" were re engineered to increase parts commonality wth the 3913TSW guns. There is a post somewhere on this forum where it was stated that there are only four parts that are needed to change one into another.

That's why the shape of the cut out for the safety/decocker is different on the later DAO guns. Unlike the early DAO guns, the later ones used the same slide as the TDA guns.

There is probably more commonality between a 3913TSW and a 3953TSW than a 3953 and a 3953TSW. There are no doubt some small parts that are interchangeable between a large number of 3rd Gens.

All of that is from my memory of a post from a few years ago, so hopefully someone will come along to confirm or correct my comments.

I dont have my 3953 and 3953TSW in front of me - but if I remember correctly they are significantly different. Early 3953TSW were 7 rd mags with notched handle and grips to match shorter 7 rd mag. Barrel may be different (Loaded Chamber Indicator on some TSW) and I believe slide and frame are slightly wider (more robust on the TSW). I wont be able to access pistols this week - hopefully one of the more expert members will answer - but until then caveat emptor.

Frames and Slides are different between 3953 and 3953TSW. Magazines interchange and maybe some internal parts - but in bigger items - NO GO. Will post pictures later.

See Pictures 3953 & 3953TSW - sorry for fuzziness on Frame Ends - but you get the point - 3953TSW is significantly more beefy than Plain Jane 3953

That was very nice of you to go into such detail. Thank You!!

Had to take some pictures anyway - trying to figure out which ones will go as I am thinning herd.

And TSW vs non-TSW question comes up often enough - though more often on the full size 40xx and 59xx pistols where the differences are more known. The TSW and non-TSW mags will interchange except for 4013/4053 (single stack) vs 4013/4053TSW (double stack) and the short 3913/3953 7 rd.

There are also at least 3 variants of the 3953TSW - no pictures as I dont have but the one version with 8 rd mag and rail and LCI port. Other variants are early 3913/53TSW with 7 rd mag, and the later 3913/53TSW with regular 8 rd mag; the 3913/53TSW with and without rail; and the 3913/53TSW with and without Loaded Chamber Indicator Port.
