Just to let you younger members know. Be careful
with your hearing.
I just got fitted with my brand new Hearing Aids this
week at the age of 54.
Too many loud concerts at a young age and too much
shooting with no hearing protection.
Started shooting a 6" model 19 when i was 16 years old
and always thought i was an invincible young stud who
did'nt need to wear plugs or muffs when shooting.
Wrong .............
So, protect yourself and your kids ears when you go
shooting. It will save you down the road. I learned my
lesson the hard way.

I think it's good advice. I very rarely go shooting without ear protection. I don't like ringing ears :D
 
I'm 37 and I've had hearing damage for years. I'm not where I need hearing aids, but I do have a constant ringing in my ears.
Also, if there is the slightest sound close to me, I struggle to hear a sound that's farther away. For instance, if I'm running the faucet for a drink of water and Mrs. Hillbilly says something behind me, I can hear that she said something, but I can't hear what she said.

Too much abusing my hearing by running air tools at work, shooting, lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc. with no ear protection.

Now I try to wear plugs or muffs any time I'm doing anything loud. I'm trying not to cause any more damage than I have already.

So, for younger guys, if you won't take advice from an old buzzard like chud333:D:D, take it from a younger guy like me.
Wear hearing protection. :cool: :cool:
If you do something that makes your ears ring, you're causing damage. ;)

I can't understand what people are saying when I am running the faucet either so don't worry about that. I'd say that's pretty normal.
 
I was told my ear doctor that driving a car or riding a motorcycle with the drivers side window down can cause hearing loss and riding a cycle with out your ears covered can also cause hearing loss. I drove my car fast with the windows down and the radio up as high as it would go. I would stick my little ear bud from my transistor radio and jack that up. working on a farm driving a tractor, shooting shot guns then there was the time in the air force working on or near the aircraft. You are never to young to protect your hearing. parents make sure kids understand the noise level from ear buds and deep bass sound can damage young ears.

While driving with the driver's window down, semi trucks would pull up alongside me ant unload their air brakes. That hurt.

Also, the inept maintenance in our department had an AC compressor near me with a high pitched whirring until a smart person finally took trouble to fix it. Somebody also installed a steam ejector right outside my office. I'm sure these things damaged my hearing more than anything.

The last time I was at the indoor range I answered a call on my cell, then forgot to put my 'ears' back on until I was reminded. Ouch.
 
I got hearing aids at 47 years old.
Back when I was younger I was a Detroit Diesel mechanic. I ran engines on a dyno wide open without any mufflers. I am sure that didn't help much. All that time I shot on a trap league a couple of nights a week.
All this with no hearing protection.
I wish I could go back and buy a 12 dollar box of ear plugs.

you can't use ear buds with hearing aids, obviously. On the few times that I use ears buds the device warns me that I have the volume at a dangerous level. But, it is the only way I can hear the music.
 
Saw my first set of earmuffs back around 1965, a set of big Straightaways. I had been shooting .45 hardball off and on. I said to myself, "Self, you gotta get a pair of these". Bought a pair, and still have them, with replaced seals. Ever since I have used ear protection for everything. That's including four years of jet engines and a bunch of years doing qualifications and my own shooting as well.

I think I'm losing ground a little now but all things considered--they work.

Me too, more damage from power tools years ago then shooting....Shoot rarely........ collect alot....Lousy shot anyway.....Oops,, not 'sposed to admit that :)

Please DON'T EVER go shooting without hearing protection.

Like Chuck, I had to be fitted with hearing aids this summer. They are great but, I really could have used the $6,800.00 for something fun.
