Mixed Emotions Day, But the Right Decision Made( update 22 )

That is a shame that it hasn't been shot in 45 years. You and your son should take it out and shoot it together. I bought this 1960ish vintage HP from my friend and riding buddy. He just passed about 3 weeks ago from brain cancer. I took this gun out a week later and shot it in memory of my friend. John is in the middle.

Wait what ? Your favorite gun is NOT an S&W ? You do realize what forum you're on right ? That's a good feeling. I give my son guns from time to time. It usually cost me money to gift them because I have to ship them to Texas. When I tell him I might sell a gun he's like, " maybe you should just ship it to me". Kids !!!!!!

Several years ago my wife was thinking about buying a gold coin and making a necklace. Her mother gave her a $5 dollar gold piece that she had always had. Wife told me after her mother died that the gold piece meant more than what she inherited because her mother gave it to her before she died. I got to thinking about that and gave our son the Python I bought new in 1965 and it went out of the house every morning with me for 40 some years. He was surprised and pleased and said he thought the only way he would ever get that gun was to get it out of the casket. Larry

That's great. Yesterday I was tossing around the idea of wether to buy gun A or gun B for my son's 42nd birthday. I sorta have one of each, but different generations from the manufacturers. Today I decided to just take both guns to him and let him pick one. I don't need two 40 caliber pistols. And, I'm on this fixed retirement income!
The only gun that I would never sell is my dad's K22. I told my grandson he will get it next, hopefully when I'm still alive.
I'm only 66, but I think I may be standing near the doorway to dementia or whatever it is that makes me forget words & names, so my "stuff" needs to go sooner than later.

Mixed emotions day for the OP because he realized too late he should have bought a crate full of BHP's at that price. I am sure the new owner will cherish it.

Today is the day that I will pass my favorite gun down to my oldest son. My mint Browning Hi-Power that I bought new in 1971 for 94.00. It has not been fired in 45 years.

He has been after it, and I guess it is time. Still, it is sad for so many reasons

Pete, this is a very good day. I'm proud for you to be able to pass your Hi-power to your son. Good for you, and I bet your son is proud. You might miss it for a little while but that will pass. Like has been mentioned in a post above, it gives me great pleasure to give my sons a firearm of mine. This needs to be done while we're in the land of the living and not after we're gone.

I've also started giving my kids (and a brother) a gun or two over the last few years and it's worked out very well!

They still bring them over to shoot and bring ammo too! Win win.

Here's my son with my Dad's shotgun that he was given last year.

As my sons turned 21, I gave each a 1911 variant. Along with everything the would need to care and feed it. My 1911's will stay with me until the end, then they can pick and choose as they like!

My dad had at least one BHP and three 1903 Colt Model M's. When he passed I had hoped my brother and I could at least buy them from his widow, I think she gave our heirlooms to her nephews! She will probably outlive me, but not my brother: What goes around, comes around!

Birthday Gift

In 1958, I bought a new Marlin 39A at the BX at Ernest Harmon AFB Newfoundland. Paid $53. Fired hundreds of rounds over the years but kept the rifle in almost LN condition.

In 2018, I gave it to my 60-year old son for a birthday present. He first shot it when he was about 10 years old.

I don't see any of my grandkids being interested in grandpa's old guns and wouldn't trust one of them. My son, while very pro-gun, is more interested in ARs in any form and doesn't reload (No hope for my wildcats). I probably should sell what I don really need or use and buy a nice truck, but no one makes good one anymore.

Mixed Emotions Day, But the Right Decision Made

You guys pulled at my heart strings but I am not ready to give away some of my favorite guns, 1911s and BHPs. I was just thinking about doing that earlier today but after reading this thread I am going to hang on a bit longer.
