Mod 66-2 Round Butt?

I suspect a modified grip frame on a 66-2 would be easy to spot as they had grooved front and back straps. If the back strap was altered to convert it to a round butt, the grooving would be lost.

Well, yes but it would be pretty hard to exactly match the remaining original grooving unless a very talented person did it.

Unless MODIFIED has there EVER been a factory 4" Mod 66-2 Round Butt?

The Model 66 was a very popular among law enforcement departments. Although not a cataloged product, I expect the factory would put a 4" barrel on a round butt frame for a special order from a LE agency. More often we've seen cases where an individual officer or security guard had a 4" barrel put on their personally owned round butt Model 66 frame because that's what he/she was required to carry.

Asking if S&W EVER did something reminds me of the long-standing admonition to never say NEVER or ALWAYS when it comes to S&W. Now we can add EVER to the list.

If indeed you've found one and are thinking about buying it, I'm sure you will find a lot of envious members here on the Forum.

S&W did build a few (3) round butt 15s in 4" as a special order. I can't say for sure about a model 66, but it would seem logical that such a critter might exist.

I have a 66-2 RB with a 4" barrel. It is a special order or a 2 1/2" that someone put a 4" barrel on it. The backstrap grooves are factory, i think it left the factory with a 2 1/2" barrel.
