Model 10-5 2"

I was at my LGS yesterday and they had put out a 41 gun estate consignment and there were a bunch of accessories and empty handgun boxes that did not match anything.

I spied a S&W 10-5 box and it had a set of magnas in it along with a grip adaptor and paper.....I gave $20.00 for it and went home happy.

Fast forward to this morning and when I went in they said they had found the 10-5 2'' that went with the box.

I asked how much for the 10-5 and they went and got it. It was in excellent shape and the former owner had replaced the Magnas/adaptor with a set of Uncle Mikes combat grips.

Well happy days because I really like those grips on .357s.

Anyway I gave them $380 for the 10-5 so I have $400 in it, not a smoking deal but a very good one.

It looks like it shipped in '74 by the serial (D623208).

BTW....Does anyone know the story on the S&W logoed grip adaptor? I seem to remember that they were available as a S&W accessory back in the 80s and you would see them on a blue plastic wrapped card along with other S&W grips on a display rack.

They don't go for all that much on GunPorker, around $450 is average.

Maybe add $100 for the box and UM grips.

1srelluc, u better ck again. A nice 2" 10-5 starts at $700 with box. Probably over $800 most times. Beat up 4" police trade in are bringing over $400.

Not in that condition they don't. Plus add in fees, tax, shipping. and FFL transfer costs. OP absolutely scored.

That was a great deal. I would not let mine go for that. It is 1968 serial number D138, and only had a couple cylinders fired through it. So the story goes, but it looks it. Have box too

Can't seem to find a picture beyond this, but it now wears stags.

I've tried to untangle the corporate history behind this style of adapter, but sources are limited to non-existent.

Pachmayr poineered the "Sure Grip" in the 1930s, but then from the 1940s to the 1960s, Mershon used that name and was Tyler's main competitor, actually much bigger than Melvin's business.

Around 1959, Pachmayr bought Mershon but maintained the Mershon brand for quite a while. I have not been able to determine exactly when Pachmayr-branded adapters hit the market, but it looks like not before the late 60s.

Around the same time the S&W-branded adapters appeared particularly in police equipment stores. There are rumored to have been adapters stamped with other proprietary brand logos, but I haven't seen any. The general assumption seems to be that Pachmayr had the adapters manufactured by a plastics subcontractor who also produced the S&W and maybe other licensed variants.

But this is all conjecture. The only evidence I have is from the 1938 Stoeger catalog and proves that Pachmayr started all of this:

I have a 10-5 2" SB from 1969 and it is a great shooter! With 4.4 Universal Clays and 1-20 156 gr. SWC cast bullets it shoots tight groups to the sights at 7 yds. Typical smooth K frame action. You will really enjoy that shooter. Enjoy it!

I'll have to dig it out and check the box that the S&W grip adapter came in, I have a couple S&W adapters/boxes. Likely S&W subcontracted Pachmayr or someone else to make their adapters. As I best remember the box clearly identified the adapter as a S&W product for S&W revolvers. On the other hand I have adapters for both S&W and Colt revolvers that were made by Pachmayr, Mershon and Tyler with the matching boxes.

Thank you very much Absalom for your post of the info about the Pachmayr grip adaptor. I knew that Pachmayr had purchased or otherwise acquired Mershon Grips. I knew it was in the 60's sometime but wasn't certain as to the exact timing. I always assumed that this particular grip adaptor was introduced to compete with Tyler's (or was it the other way around...?) I have used both for revolvers, actually preferring them to a full grip, unless using the rubber Pachmayr grip. I wonder if the grip adaptor was actually a Mershon product??? But, your info is very well done! Thanks again.
