I have a model 10-5 6" serial # D6219xx The Standard Catalog says that 10-5 and 10-6 are 1962. However, it also states that the "D" serial prefix did not begin until 1967.

Any thoughts would be helpful. This place is a wonderful resource for Info..

It feeds my addiction, though. I spend way too much time here.

Hi, let me clear some confusion up for you. The model 10-5 model change applied to the pencil barrel model 10... The model 10-6 change applied to the heavy barrel model 10.
Both the model 10-5 and 10-6 change occured in the same year., The 10-7 later in like 1977 applied to both models. The difference for the 2 was this.
10-5 pencil barrel had the front sight changed in 1962 to be slimmer.
10-6 heavy barrel had the gas cylinder ring moved to the yoke in 1962.
The 10-7 in 1977 applied to both the pencil barrel and the heavy barrel and changed the the gas ring again.

I am at work and do not have my book with me. But if you look at your book and read carefully you will see what I am talking about. So your serial number would be correct. I have a 5" model 10 that I had to do a little research on and figured out exactly what you just described. I was also very confused until I read into the book a little deaper.
Hope this helps a little

Hey, I am teling you I was confused about it also. That is what makes the 10-5 unique...read the scsw about the model 10 and look a the model changes and you will see what i am talking about.

My 10-5 with serial number D581xx shipped in October 1968 and yours shipped around 1974

panamajack310 is right, the M10-5 and the M10-6 ran concurrently, the difference is in the barrel profile (standard versus heavy).
In 1977, however, the next engineering change was applied and the M10-5 became the M10-7 (standard), while the M10-6 became the M10-8 (heavy). The M10-7 and -8 ran concurrently until they were replaced by the M10-9 and M10-10.
The M10 versions can be confusing, starting with the -1 Heavy barrel, there were parallel models running, with a change in the odd/even structure happening when the M10-2 became the M10-4 and M10-5 - both standard barrel models with the only difference being the width of the front sight. The M10-3 at that time morphed into the M10-6.

It's a fascinating series of changes in this all-too ubiquitous model.
