hey people, Im just wondering about my stepdads 10-6 that I sold him( big moelsteak) , serial # d580xxx It says on the barrel 38 special but I tried putting a 357 magnum on it just to see how far it would go in, & it fit perfectly, I know smith & wesson made a few model 10's in 357, but this one clearly says 38 special, I dont think it would be a problem shooting a 357 cause it has the bull barrel. What do you guys think? should i beg to buy it back?

Your serial number dates to 1973, so this could be one of the Model 10-6 revolvers made up for the NY State Police chambered for the .357 Magnum. Are the charge holes recessed (counter-bored)?

To my knowledge, the 10-6s chambered for .357 are clearly marked on the barrel as .357.

Strongly suggest NOT firing .357 in your .38 marked 10-6.

The 10-6 marked 357 Mag has a wider trigger. Also 357 Mags are heat treated for the 357 Mag cartridge. A standard model 10-6 or any other model does not receive the same heat treatment.

no, they are not, jus pinned barrel

I'm pretty sure the 10-6 made for the NYSP had the counter-sunk charge holes. Also, as noted above, the barrel was marked for the .357 Magnum cartridge. It sounds like someone reamed the charge holes on your gun. I agree with others that it would not be a good idea to shoot .357 Mag ammo in your gun. You might get away with it, but there is risk and it is not worth taking.

thanks guys, my parents jus keep it in a sock drawer with 38's in it anyways, it just comes out on new years lol

Except, Pete, for a few thousand 10-6 revolvers that were special ordered by the NYSP in the early 1970s. That is the point of this thread.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone happen to know whether the NYSP guns have agency stampings, or were they sold to individual troopers and can only be identified by the 10-6/.357 combination?
