A gun shop near me has just received some Mod 10's and 64's as police or security company trade-ins. I'm going to go take a look at them, and was wondering if there's anything specific to look for (other than obvious wear and tear). I don't know how old they are. The 10's are priced at $230 and the 64's haven't been priced yet. Good price? Fair? Poor? I was surprised to see that new 64's are less expensive than a new 10. Aren't they pretty much the same except SS vs. blue?

If they are mechanically sound I would buy everyone they have at that price. And yes the model 64 and 10 are the same save for the fact one is blue and the other stainless.

I've seen some Model 10's come in from Jordan that were really rough. They were number stamped on the left side under the cylinder window. Import mark on the barell. The model 64's would be more interesting to me. If any good buy them all.

If any are 3 inch ones buy them for sure. I have a 3 inch Model 10 "Aussie" and a 3 inch 64 "CYA" and they both shoot a lot better than I do.

Have you ever eaten one potato chip? One M&M'S? Fixed sight K frames are like the aforementioned items, one is not enough. In 1996 I bought a box full of Taurus 82's ( much like a S&W 10), twelve of them because of the price. I have seven fixed sight K frames at the moment. They are the nicotine of the handgun world.

A fixed sight K frame is a versatile firearm. By matching stocks to the shooter's hand, ammo to the situation, and holsters to the occasion it will fulfill most any need the average owner has. Properly cared for it can easily serve three or four generations of a family, and then some. For well over a hundred years, in military, LE, and self defense conflicts around the world, somebody walked away alive carrying a K frame.

Buy yourself two, a matched pair is a neat thing to have.

I definitely agree with the 'matched pair' idea, if you can pick up a pair of M64 police trade-ins for approximately the cost of a new .357 ... :D
