Model 10, any fans?

I have a 10-8 that I bought back in the late 1980s and had a spring kit installed. It is one of my best shooters. In the early 1990s when I had to qualify on the Virginia Armed Security Officer's Course I usually fired a perfect 300 (100%).

Model 10's???????

In the past 2 years I have picked up three of them. A 1968 10-5, 1982 10-8 and sometime in the 1990's (I think) 10-10.

Two 4" heavy barrels and one 3" heavy barrel.

I really like the smooth trigger pull in double-action.

I believe Cylinder and Slide is located in Fremont, Nebraska.

this is my favorite S&W a model 10-5 3". It was a Victoria Australia police gun. I added crimson trace LG-307 laser grips to help make up for aging eyes.

Deep, dark secret of mine: I once bought a mint 2" blue 10 simply because it was in the showcase. Now you know. Another secret: I did not buy a NIB 6" pencil-barrel (we call them that in NY) because it did not look right. Now you know II. Please be gentle.

Vegas casinos have been letting go of 4" HB 64s to go to some kind of square gun. They appear in shops with scratches and nicks on the outside and almost unfired inside. Perfectly timed. Oh my!

There are many variations re finish, bbl length and style, RB-SB and we need every one! I always encourage folks to pick up a 2" bbl when available: the gun-grabbers will always fall back on these as 'Sat. night specials.' Story here.

Mas Ayoob has written that the 4" 10/64 is 'small enough to carry concealed and big enough to look menacing.' Agree. Another story.

Unfortunate that the true K-frame (no lock) really only exists on the used gun shelf and in our safes. Let's keep them going.

I did that more than once! ;)

I think the 2" guns do look better than almost anything else but my pencil barelled, 4", vintage Wells Fargo, well used Model 10 (I think it's nickel plated, could be some kind of chrome, it's pretty worn but - - - ) is SOME KIND OF SHOOTER!!!! I'll be gentle. But you passed up a great gun!

I will presume I need to be in Las Vegas to obtain one of these?

There was a time when snub nosed revolvers were the favorite target of the anti-gunners. I remember well the vituperations heaped on so-called Saturday Night Specials. Seems like today they don't even rate a yan from the antis....

You must have some great stories.

I think a 2" is as menacing looking as a 4", actually, but Mas claiming it's easy to conceal a 4" is his classic over statement - it is not - except under a coat or other long outer garment, mostly worn in the cold weather (anything conceals under a heavy coat!) where he's from. You just try to conceal a 4" revolver in your Texas summer clothes.....

Sad but true. Which explains why I buy them so often. But as I noted in another thread, I am not too, too hung up on newfangled changes.

I picked one up from Buds last year that had a lot of "character". I foolishly sold it. Since selling it, I longed for it. Bought a 10-8 that walked some mean streets of NY and was a LE trade-in. This one has even "MORE character" than the first Aussie Trade-in I had. But for $240, I couldn't be happier. It's just an amazing little shooter. I considered refinishing it myself as she's been rode hard, but then I simply thought it's nice to have something that shows its age. Previous owner said something along these lines, "She's like an ugly woman that knows how to cook really well."

Model 10's, well let's see; pre-model 10 M&P 6 inch pencil barrel from 1954, 10-5 4 inch tapered, 10-6 (mis-marked it is a 10-5) 5 inch tapered barrel and a 64-1 heavy barrel. Formerly had a 10-15 4 inch heavy barrel, but traded it even-up for the pristine 5 inch. All of them are great shooters which hit POA with 148-158 grain ammo. No wonder S&W sold so many.

ISCS Yoda: Flattered that you paid such close attention to my post. By the way, I have carried the 4" 10 HB in NYC summer weather in a IWB holster under an outside-the pants shirt. Just not very often! Oh, and re 2"ers: the anti-gunners will never stop until they take everything away from us. Thanks again for your post. Stay safe!

One of the best I have owned is a 2" model 10-5 round butt. Bobbed hammer, and about the best timing and lockup I have ever felt. Great size, great balance, and 6 rounds. About the perfect package.

Not only that, but none other than Di Fi herself was promoting the use of the five shot snubby revolver as "the only gun a person really needs" during this last attack on rifles.

Ahhh, the M&P/Model 10. Who, in their right mind, would not have a Model 10 or three in the collection? This is the epitome of just "the right stuff"...... :)

Here is what the M&P/M10 cabinet looked like a year ago......

Let's see what we have......

Top row - 2" guns
Next row - 3"
Rows 3,4 - 4"
Row 5 - 5"
Row - 6" versions

Alas.... time moves on and things change, and after 15 years of collecting this model my directions changed and the M10/M&P herd has thinned a bit, still have some neat examples but the many are gone to good homes now, miss them actually.

Any credible collection needs specimens of the Military & Police line, just wouldn't be right without them..... Because of the millions made, there are so many collectible, small production run examples to seek out, of course any "standard" model is just right in it's own right.

Enjoy,

Picked up a model 10-10 a few months ago. It's now my favorite and best shooter.

I have a 2" , 3" and 4" Model 10. I think they and the Model 64s ( I have 2, 3, and 4" Model 64s ) are the most beautiful revolvers I have ever seen. The 2" was a gift from an incredibly beautiful Irish woman who worked for a Colorado PD before women were allowed to be sworn officers ( her kids were anti gun and she was a close friend of my Dads ). The other two Model 10s were old cop guns that I had refinished. I carry the Model 64s because I can't bear creating holster wear on the Model 10s.

I LOVE MODEL 10s.....!!!!

Me, too! I have 4, 5, and 6 inch tapered barrels and two 4 inch heavy barrels. Well, one is my wife's. I think they are the most fun and useful of all revolvers and I would not be without one. I think my favorite is the 5 inch.

Model 10 you say?

I felt so left out I just bought two from the forum administrator! I am getting a 10-11 and 10-14. Each of my sons (13 and 15) will get one - can hardly wait to see there faces. Of course, they will be given proper instruction, safe handling, practice with the gun unloaded and full responsibility for cleaning and maintaining them. When they are old enough for a permit they get that added to theirs. Maybe this way they'll keep their hands off my 686 and 19-5. :)
