I have a model 10-5 with a ratchet that is roughed up more than other guns I have owned. My question is how does a ratchet get damaged? I do not intend to file on it and only use it to plink with. The gun was a police/security trade. The gun locks up tight and has no excessive endshake. How does this happen?

I would think that repeated impact with inappropriate tools would beat up the ratchet.

Thinking it over, if the operator had the cylinder open had then defeats the cylinder release by holding it rearward and thumbcocking the hammer, closing the cylinder would bash the ratchet against the hand. It would take much abuse like this to wreck the ratchet though.

With good pictures we may be able to speculate what did cause the damage. Without it would be purely guessing.

One likely way an extractor gets beat up is the hand is too long sticking thru the window. As you close the cylinder, the hand catches and drags on the ratchets.
If your hand is sticking into the breach face, your gun needs to be repaired.

Other way is careless cleaning with a metal cleaning rod as the parts are relatively soft.
