Tell me about this gun. I realize it's no "19" but I have seen one with a 3" barrel. Does this help the value or should I say, selling price?

The Model 13 is the fixed sight version of the Model 19, both being K frames, and has always had a following. The 3" barrel version was the FBI's service revolver and is extremely popular. I love mine and spent some time looking before I found one to buy.

3" model 13's are getting hard to find in good condition, which is everything. In great condition between $500.00 to $750.00 in my neck of the woods. Add maybe $100.00 with box, tools and paperwork.

Just my 2 cents worth.

A Mod 13 in a 3 inch, would be a heavy barreled 357 mag with a non-shrouded ejector rod.
It was popular with the FBI in mid to late 80"s.

As far as barrel length and pricing goes a good rule of thumb is the shorter the barrel the higher the price.:)

Mod 13-3 & Mod 65-3, the same gun in stainless steel.

2 3" M-64s here and a 65 somewhere in my future.

When I went on the road in 1983 our issued weapon was a model 66 with dump pouches. We didn't get speed loaders for a couple of years. All of the F.B.I. agents carried model 13's with 3" heavy barrels.

I remember being at a training session one day and there was an older F.B.I. agent talking with a railroad detective and they were telling war stories from "back in the day". Being a wide eyed rookie I was taking it all in and checking out the equipment that these two guys, who had both apparently been in several gun fights, happened to be carrying.
The F.B.I. agent carried a model 13 with a Tyler T grip and a polished aluminum trigger shoe in what looked to be a Jordan style holster with a retaining strap. In front of his holster he had a leather cartridge carrier that only had two shell loops. He carried two spare rounds! The railroad detective had a 13 on him as well in a clam shell style holster that the front was open on from top to bottom and was held shut with spring tension. He also carried a snub nosed revolver on his weak side in a cross draw holster. I thought I would impress him about my gun knowledge and asked him about his model 36. He corrected me and told me it was a model 31 in .32 caliber. Apparently that was his issued gun and he carried the model 13 on his own.

I have always thought that the model 13 was one of the best looking revolvers that Smith has ever put out.

I have 13-2 (4 inch) that I bought around 1980 that is still in good condition that I'd toyed with the idea of using as trade-in for 686 plus, but I hate to part with it after having had it for so long.

I think it was Colin Chapman who advocated for the 3" K-frame at his shooting school in the late 70's and early 80's saying it was the perfect balance of size, barrel length, and caliber. I would have to agree, wish I could find one now. Well, of course I let mine go. :={

No wonder I can't find one. You have both. Been looking for one for a few years.

Both of yours look to be in excellent condition. Very nice!

While the 2 3/4" or 3" M19/66 are arguably better lookin', the M13/65 3" is a better carry gun IMHO. No need for adjustable sights to catch clothing, no need for the extra weight under-lug and is just a better serious carry option IMHO.

I agree 110% on the sights, carry guns are better with fixed sights. I really wish S&W would introduce a new Model 65. As for the underlug, I do like full protection of the ejector rod, so if S&W would simply take their current Model 66 Combat Magnum and mill in a sight in the frame and a shorter front sight to match the rear, I'd be a buyer.

I've been trying to talk a friend out of his 3" Model 13-3 for a few years, one day I'll succeed.

I'd buy one. It would make a good "knock around" revolver.
