Hello all,
This is the first post for me. Please bear with me. I recently picked up a model 18-3 (ramp sight and taper barrel) that came with a S&W blue box, paper wrap and brush. It has 2 different serial numbers on it. Stamped on the yoke it is marked 7Kxxxx and on the bottom of the grip it is marked 8Kxxxx. Of course I have chosen the x to not give away the whole serial number. The thing is the "x" numbers match, same in both places. Same numbers in the same order. Still with me?
I guess your first question is, what does the box say? Original writing shows 7Kxxxx consistent with the yoke. The 7 has been overwritten to try to change it to an 8 and then just scribbled over that. Kxxxx is still original. The complete 8Kxxxx number has been written to the left of the original in a different pen and handwriting. The other characteristics on the box, TH, TT, barrel length and finish all correctly depict the gun and are original untouched.
I purchased this used a couple months ago at a national retailer. They included a note as to the 2 different numbers per my request so if there was a major problem I would be refunded. They said it was run through an FBI type check against stolen serial numbers when it was brought in and I asked them to do it again, both sets of numbers, while I waited. They came back and said it was OK. Well I have been wanting an 18 for a long time so I bought it. I insisted they knock some off the price for the trouble and I got it lowered another $50. :)
Sooo... to those in the know, is there a reasonable explanation to what I got going on? Has the factory ever goofed up serial numbers by a digit? Is fraud of some sort likely? Don't even offer to take it off my hands because she is the sweetest revolver I have ever come across. It's going to the grandkid after I'm finished with it.
Thanks in advance for any insight. I am off to bed and will check back tomorrow.

Welcome to the forum!

We hear about model number stamping errors and over stamps fairly often. This is the first time I can remember hearing about a serial number discrepancy.

People make mistakes. The number on the butt should be treated as the official serial number.

There is no "treated as" to it, the butt number is the legal serial number of the gun, period.

OP, what you have is a simple "mis-mark", a quite common occurrence. I assume you meant the 7X number is stamped in the yoke cut, not on the yoke itself. The only number that should appear on the yoke is the assembly number that appears on either the yoke cut also, the left side of the grip frame under the stocks, and inside the sideplate.

A factory boo-boo. (and no, it's not worth a premium)
One has to remember that the poor devils who work at S&W, work monotonous 12 hour shifts around the clock.

Thank you for the quick replies and information. Looks like I can relax a bit as it appears the consensus is that it is not a bad thing, like fraud. That was my main concern.
To be clear the 7Kxxxx is on the yoke cut, the stationary part that appears when the cylinder is swung out. Opposite that, the swingdown yoke, has assembly numbers on it that are similar to the ones under the left side grip.
I also found a folded up letter from the factory which I will try to figure out how to post here. It states the date of manufacture as 4-1-1976. Perhaps I got in on an April Fools joke?

Yea, the 7K and 8K came from the 1974-1975 time frame and those SN's had 4K, 5K, 6K and 9K SN's mixed in with them. It's hard to figure out (without a letter) for us and I think the guys in the shop got mixed up from time to time as well. The M18's are great guns. Enjoy!

BTW, here is my -2. The target stocks are factory verified original.
