I have recently been considering a 38 service type for basically, just a plinking, or shooter. The LGS has some very decent model 15 combat masterpieces, for around 340 bucks. They also have a model 19 that looks pretty ratty, but mechanically is tight. I have no need for a 357, I already reload for the wifes 38 special lever rifle. I am wondering on what others opinion would be on this. Thanks

You can't go wrong with either. I have probably shot fewer than 50 rounds of 357 through my Model 19 in 20-something years, while it has seen thousands of 38 wadcutters. I just don't enjoy shooting hot loads. If I ever saw a Model 15 for $340 I'd buy them all. A beater Model 15 goes for about $600 here in Calif.

Imo the 15 at $340 is the way to go for your scenario,
On the other hand same condition same price the 19 is a better gun with the only disadvantage that it is slightly heavier ....slightly

My LGS has a 15-1 for 500. The blueing is almost nonexistent from holster wear, though the action, rifling and forcing cone are magnificent. Its a tough call.

For my purposes, a nice 15 is more desirable than a "ratty 19" I rarely shoot .357 loads, so that part is not important. I do not have a 15, but have a 67 no dash. Pretty hard to beat in a .38. Bob

My humble recommendation:

I like them both.

The Model 15 has a theoretical accuracy advantage over the Model 19 when you're shooting .38 Special in both, due to the shorter jump to the throat, but in practice you won't notice the difference.

They'll both get dirty when you shoot them a lot.

I prefer the heavier barrel on the Model 19, and I like to shoot 158gr .357's. I also prefer the lug protecting the ejector rod. That said, your situation sounds like the Model 15 is the way to go.

Model 15 all the way for me.
The 19 is a fine gun no doubt and it's the more versatile of the two but the balance of the 15 is much better to me.
If I want to shoot a 357 I reach for my 28. My 19 sits in the safe for the most part.

I'm really surprised to be the first one to say it, but if you can swing it, buy the 19 AND one of the 15's. You didn't say what they are asking for the 19, but from the rest of your post I'm assuming it is comparable in price. Personally I have one of each and wouldn't want to give up either one.

When I shoot them, I can't tell much of a difference since I very rarely load with anything but .38 Spl. So, it would come down to price and condition. Based on that criteria, it would seem the M15 would be the better choice.

I had my 15 and 19 out to the range this afternoon and shot both. So, as they have said, buy one of each if you can swing it. 5 years from now, you'll be glad you did. Bottom line is they both shoot Great!

I'm a bit biased owning a 15-1. With that being said, if you don't plan on 357, go with the 38. That's a heck of a price, I would t let mine go for that!
