I'm a very new S&W wanna-be collector. Is the photo below a HE Model of 1905, 4th change? It is cal .32-20, serial number 137461 with a 6.5 inch barrel.

Welcome!

Yes, it's a 4th change and it's toward the end of production. .32-20 4th changes started as sn 65701 in 1915 and ended in 1940 at sn 144684 never to be made again. I've got a few (including an 1899 model). They're great shooters.

These are great old guns, I have two in 32-20. Both are nickle plated with one a twin to your Smith minus the MOP grips. She's wearing old style diamond wood with serial #107046. These are a hoot to shoot. I look for 32-20 Smiths at every gun show. Also have several Winchesters in this caliber. Good luck on your collecting, its the chase that is the most fun.

Thanks for the info guys! I'm afraid I could get addicted to these pre-war guns.. maybe it has already happened! Most of these 1905's I've seen are a lot worse on the outside than the inside. I think they spent more of their life in the sock drawer than the range!

In that condition, it has very little, if any, collector value ; its just a
shooter. $225 is the high end for that gun ; $150 to $175 would be a much
better price - given what it is.

The thing about these guns at these prices is that, maybe, you paid 25% too
much, but its only $50 or so. Its not the end of the world !

Either I'm getting to be like a broken records, or folks are purposely buying
there shooters just to get me to say it again, but : this is not a good
investment. You will be much better off saving your money for a really decent
target revolver - maybe cost you $750 to $1000, depending on what it is, rather
than wind up with 4 or 5 guns like this.

Mike, thanks a bunch for taking the time to reply and giving me the benifit of your expertise, I sincerly appreciate it! I've always heard if you are going to collect it is far better to get the best condition items you can find. I've been desiring a S&W .32 and I'm afraid this one will only whet my appetite for better quality! Thanks again Mike!
