Just wanted to show off another one of my inherited beauties. This one is special to me as it's the last one my grandfather bought. Unfortunately he never got to shoot it. I shot the 6 in the moon clip the night he passed in his honer and now she's my only safe queen. I thought it was interesting because its chambered in 45 acp not long colt.

... I thought it was interesting because its chambered in 45 acp not long colt.

The reason that revolver is chambered in 45 ACP and not the 45 long Colt is because it is a Model 25-2. The Model 25-5 was cut for the long Colt cartridge.

Nice revolver. I like the S&W ACP revolver a lot.

A beauty! I have one just like it, only I had the sight changed out to a ramp recently. I don’t shoot it a lot. Only a couple of times so far. I usually push the spent shells out with a pen instead of using moon clips

25-2

In addition to StrawHat's explanation of the model numbering, please note the cylinder length in the frame window! The 25-5 has a cylinder that is longer and fills the frame window! This allows for the use of the heavier bullets usually shot in the 45 Long Colt cartridge. S&W chambered a small number of the short cylinder guns chambered in the 45 Long Colt which meant the shooter probably use bullets in the 200gr range and needed to seat them deep in the brass.

The 25-2 is one of my favorites. My father was not much of a shooter but I let him try it, he truly enjoyed shooting it. I always preferred shooting it with the auto rim rounds, less complicated and I just looked in the direction of the ejector rod and the empties seemed to fall out. An extremely pleasant revolver to shoot and very accurate. I would be reluctant to relegate it to safe queen status, I do hope that you enjoy it and the history, even if you just take it out, wipe it down and reminisce about good memories of your grandfather.

Here are two of my Model 25-2s,

One of the standard ones
