I just recently acquired this nice Model 25-5 with a 5" heavy/straight profile pinned barrel.

S&W Model 25-5 w/5” Barrel - Album on Imgur

It letters as having a 6" barrel and checkered targets when shipped in June 1981, their comment was the barrel was cut to 5" after it left them. Nice clean gun but no box or paperwork unfortunately.

I don't think it was cut as the crown looks like factory and the caliber and Smith & Wesson rollmarks look like they are placed in between where they are on a 4" and a 6" barrel. The barrel pin is offset a tad and the grips are smooth target grips, not checkered.

Based on the letter I'm not thinking it's some kind of rare factory model but I just like the 5" barrel and the grips. Just thought I'd share.

You could have fooled me that the barrel was not original to the gun.

Good looking piece. I have a five inch M25-7. Purchased it new at the local gun store.

I like the five inch barrel, it is a good balance between sight radius, and portability.

I agree that barrel looks factory at the muzzle. Regardless you got a great gun that “should” have been made. Shame there weren’t and aren’t more 5 inch options available especially for partial-lug barrel. Very cool piece. Thanks for sharing.

I made this 5" from a 8 3/8" 25-5. The muzzle looks factory and the roll marks are close to centered. It had huge throats so I replace the cylinder with one made by reaming a model 29 cylinder.

Factory muzzle. I got quite a few S&W and a bunch of spare barrels. Before I ever cut a barrel I studied the muzzles on a bunch. There really isn't that much uniformity.

I agree, a 5" barrel on a N frame is so asthetically pleasing and a practical length it is surprising there aren't more options.
